Just looking for tips and help with first time growing.

I have a AgroMax 39x39x79 tent. Will have a 400w mh for veg, switch over to hps for flowering. I also have an 6 inch growbright high velocity inline duct fan. I will be putting 6 3gl pots, not sure if more or less would be better. they will be clones and not starting from seed. When i choose the strains will update post.

I currently live in Massachusetts, so weed is legal medical and recreational.

So just looking for some advice?
yield expectations?
is 18/6, 12/12 the best to go?
should i scog?
best height for the light when in veg state?
how long to veg/flower for?

Anything would help, first timer here.

Welcome and good luck. I think the trick is to obsess about every one of the things you're asking, read all the different (and usually contradictory) opinions, and take your best shot. Chances are you'll end up harvesting some weed regardless. Second grow, maybe a little more. If I were you I'd start at growweedeasy.com, a really helpful site. One more small piece of advice -- yes, it's legal in Mass., but it's illegal in the U.S. (go figure). Which means the feds can still hassle you. Didn't happen under the last administration; nowadays all bets are off. So by all means grow, but you still might want to keep it pretty much a secret.

yield expectations? about a pound! lol (first to say it, i win!) really tho, hard to say, just depends on a million things. you will get something tho
is 18/6, 12/12 the best to go? veg at 18/6, flower at 12/12
should i scog? it depends. do you want regular harvests? or one big one every 4 months? scrog will use your whole tent
best height for the light when in veg state? you should flip before they reach 15" tall, but 12" would be better (assuming no scrog or lst)
how long to veg/flower for? for a 12" height from seed, should take 4-6 weeks. sooner from clone

accept the fact now that you'll probly make mistakes, so dont stress about it. you wont kill it. just pay attention to them and learn.
start with a couple clones and learn how to feed/water, see how they grow. in 3 weeks get 2 more clones. repeat in another 3 weeks. this is a SOG. you can harvest every 3 weeks with this, plus it will allow you to dip you toes in first.

keep a fan on in the tent 24/7 and get a variac speed controller for that inline fan. it will drive you nuts if its in your room, pretty loud. dont get a cheap $20 speed controller, it will make the motor whine like it wants to set itself on fire

just have fun with it. be patient, stick to it. you'll get it

All great advice. As for the pots. Id start smaller with the clones to help build a stronger root system. Id start with (6) 1 gal pots first if you later transplant to 3 gal. Welp also helps knowing how big them clones are guna be. But id veg them a lil bit longer depending on size of the plants.

Two 5 gallon or three 3 gallon smart Pots , top a few times, and just thru harvest. I say read about drying and curing because that's just as big. Next round to a little more training that carters to YOUR environment. Learn to grow first then do the fancy tricks later.

You've asked some questions that show you need to do some basic research. As stated start at growweedeasy.com and understand the basics first. It won't take long.
I grow in a 36x36 in 3g pots. 4 with tomato cages and it's manageable. You can move everyone around. Any more and I don't know where you'll put them.

Thanks all for the input and help. Well I got the clones in and of the 6 are two of each; white widow, raspberry diesel and medicinal purp. I have them in the red cups for the first two weeks to have good root growth under the 400 mh light/24hr cycle. I will switch over to 3gl pots and do the 18/6 cycle before flowering.

Here is my picture of the plants. There are some cuts I noticed and burnt tips. Where I got them from said that it's okay and they will bounce back just fine.

So it's been a few days and this is happening. I watered them after 2 days of having them because they felt warm and dry after sticking my finger in to the knuckle. I do not use any nutrients, just water and the light. I don't think my light is too close, i just don't know. I'm watching them close and hoping that in few days they will recover. If i am being too much and they are fine PLEASE tell me. Feel like I am having a nervous breakdown.

I'm a newbie as well, just finishing up my first grow, but since nobody else has replied I'll tell you what I think: They look fine to me. Relax. Enjoy. It's not called "weed" for nothing -- it's a pretty hardy plant. Gonna be fine.

Hey, thanks! I ended up looking at the roots on one and wow there is a lot. I think i might need to transfer them over, on one cup they're kind of coming out the bottom. The reason I checked it was because I had another thread going and someone replied that they might need to be transferred and not get root bound.

hey good start, the roots go quite deep fast but they are probably still spreading out in there making a stronger structure. smaller roots are growing off thise ones you see coming out the bottom.gl

Hey everyone just a little update. So I decide to just transfer them into 3 gallon fabric pots (smart pots) because as you seen they was not doing to good. The roots were coming out the bottom of the cup and I think the light was set to low that gave them the burn. Put them in fox farm and they seem to be taking it good now. I'll post another update next time, It's been 7 days now.

Hey, I currently veg under a 400 MH, too. Since you asked about distances I have mine at around 40cm away from the tops of my plant. I even have a seedling there (in 45cm distance) that received full hard light from day 2 after I had it transplanted from out the water. If healthy enough even immature plants can metabolize the full thrust of artificial light (...or the sun).

I keep my lamps on 24h throughout the whole veg and basically put anything under it, seedlings, clones, vegging. Indoors the light-intensity can be easily controlled via distance. This way I encounter less problems with sativa-dominant strains (amongst other things...).

That seedling is just about 5cm farther away from the MH, but because light diminishes in strength inversely proportional to its distance, that can make a huge difference.
I mentioning this because I believe -judging from the pics you hosted- none of your plants did receive heat stress or light stress.
Heat stress means the leaves closest to the lamp has its ridges curled upwards. Light stress can result in bleaching that will create big yellowish/white dots or areas that are entirely dry/dead. If you're not sure if you should hang your lamp closer simply try it out, in 5cm steps, every day. Everytime control for above symptomatics.

If you're breeding different strains (like I do) you can "test out" the minimum distance a strain needs to a particular light and make a notice. Since light travels longer diagonally I always use some CLF to illuminate specific spots (corners...) and also have pots at a different height: outward pots are elevated: The "Sweat Spot" of your MH lamp encircles it in all directions. You make your plants grow into this circle using LST etc pp. Especially if you have different genetics you can make good use of low/high-vegging plants (you see I have all bigger plants away from the middle spot...)

The metalnut + coord dangling from the MH is there for height control. It shows me a 40cm mark, although I made knots for other wattages also. HID lamps get VERY HOT you need to be careful not to incite a FIRE with such rope! The good thing about it is that you can move it around rather freely and then also control distances diagonally.

But coming back to your plants:
They don't look that healthy. The leaves are too droopy, esp. the one in the right upper corner. It could be you just water them and it still needed some time, it could be only a minor issue that is already gone. If you give them enough light and don't drown them in water they should recover. They should also be able to get access to new soil and then develop leaves which are less bright. But some of the older fan leaves which are showing necrosis will ultimately die, there's nothing what you can do about it.
