Keep losing the potent smell after drying/curing

how to properly cure a small amount but for this amount I would need a HUGE amount of mason jars to cure.
Airtight sealed containers that store dog food work well and they are quite large. Easily will hold a few lbs.

They look like big rubbermaid containers but they have an O-ring around the lid and it keeps it airtight.

I use beer coolers to sweat large amounts.
Bird, I'm not making fun of you but using "beer coolers" is the ultimate CANADIAN solution to the problem. Did you learn that from Trailer Park Boys, The Red Green Show or Bob and Doug McKenzie on the old SCTV? On another matter, would you be my MP? Because you've already demonstrated you're smarter and more Canadian than my current MP.

The only mention of a hygrometer in this thread is by Big L. I would think that where you live -- based on the fact that humidity levels swing so wildly season to season -- one of those is mandatory. At least it takes the guess work out of the equation. The amount of time it takes to dry properly in July is going to differ greatly from January. After reading The Perfect Cure on here, I bought a good Calibre IV on Ebay and supplement it with cheap ones ($3) from Canadian Tire. (While you're there, check out the beer coolers). Calibrate the cheap ones against the Calibre IV. If you know you have it in the right "zone," then at least you can cross that issue of your list.

I also agree that it depends on the strain, genetics, maybe even the individual plant. I have a Mango plant that nothing else compares to.

Of course, there's always another possibility: maybe the aroma of the plants is being overpowered by the stench of Rob Ford? I have the same problem where I live, only it's the ugly smell of Stephen Harper, more overpowering -- but not in a good way -- than your best skunk strain.

I find some strains do not have much smell once dry just a light sweet smell remains to the bud but once you squeeze the buds they let out their true smell
other strains are very smelly in comparison and can be smelt from some distance away

Im a noob so I have no idea, but what's funny is I've recently obtained buds that look just like your dried product, and have NO taste or smell, and I always complain to my guy about it because it seems to be happening consistently. I feel like I found the grower. lol

I hang the whole plant for 2 weeks. (My trees are 6ft plus)

Then I trim and cure the herb in turkey bags for 1-2 months.
After the herb is cured, I store in jars.
No complaints, and the aroma remains pungent.

Also, some strains just don't have a dank smell. The curing process does not change that...

Last season I cultivated over 13 units.

Douggey. Try to maintain cooler temps in the dry room to ensure a slow dry. If temps go above 70-75 the drying process speeds up considerably. Also I don't know if you are indoors but if you are hanging your lights too close then the heat can take away from the flavors and aromas in the cola's.

I find when I harvest too soon I lose the "good smell" and it's closer to hay or some shit. I let my plants go as long as I can now. I don't have that issue no more.

slow dry is better...... I like to leave a little more moisture then other do when they jar up to cure... this will ensure a long good cure.. I just have to burp a lil more or longer... bubba kush reeks if that's the strain ur growing... I also like to water my plants well on harvest day... they dry slower.. you can also leave the plant intact and trim it has a whole... this will also prolong drying.....

Wow! I have seen this too many times. You must cure in glass. Metal and plastic is real bad. Even metal kills the smell and taste. Plastic leaves residue. My philosophy is, if you don't smoke out of it, why would you store in it. If you smoke barbarian weed store like a barbarian. If you smoke exotic kind, store like a connoisseur.

When you are storing there is only one way to maintain your herb indefinitely and that is to establish and maintain a relative humidity of 62%. Further, make sure its dark also if your storing over any length of time. Light is energy and cause parasitic growth. To much humidity you will get mold. Mold starts to grow at 70% RH and warmer temperatures. Don't leave your stash jar in a hot car. Don't store it in a freezer because cold air holds less humidity and it will tend to dry out. Then you take it out of the freezer and condensation builds on your buds over humidifying them.

I can't seem to find a way to keep the smell after drying/curing! I've been trying to get the most out of my smell for my past 4 harvests and I can't seem to get it. This is my process.

1. Trim fan leaves and excess leaves while the plant is still in pot.
2. Chop plants down & hang in a dark room for 3-5 days with fans blowing not directly on buds.
3. Cut buds off plant & jar for 3 weeks while burping until 55-60% humidity.

After doing all this, I seem to lose almost all the smell. What did I do wrong?

Any help would be appreciated. I've included some images. The single bud is after I trimmed the excess leaves and fan leaves (before drying/curing) the other one is after.
No fans! try that a

no amount of curing will fix a plant that didnt finish/grow properly. simple under/over feeding or feeding too late will results in the same scenario as you describe.
I never ferment in jars and dry similar to you for the smelliest herb I ever had no matter the strain in my rooms

I've always got a better smell from the buds by dry trimming vs wet. I just take the big fan leaves off then dry for about 7 days. Then i trim them up and jar them.
