Kief question ?

Your colour will vary with strains, screen type and process but typically mine comes out more towards the blonde, dark blonde end. Green to me means they're using a screen with larger holes and getting too much plant material come through.

Here's some sample batches, almost all of mine is used for coconut oil caps.

Nice. The pile beside the green lighter has a little red tinge no? Gorgeous.

Cheers, never noticed it but had another look and yes, seeing some red in there. Probably genetics or slightly late harvest on the starting material.

Mine always comes out a nice blonde colour. I use these Endecott's screens that followed me home from a metallurgy lab I used to work in 30 years ago. We used them to analyze tungsten carbide powders being milled to determine when they had reached the right consistency and milling could be stopped. The white balls are ceramic ones that were used for some milling processes. Sure wish the shaker unit had of followed me home too. It's a lot of work running a pound of trim through them by hand.

Genius! Your post gave me an idea, so I want to "pay it forward". I plan to buy a Bubble box to do dry sifting. For now I just stuff the trim into container with a sealed lid and clip lock fastener. I also throw in 3-4 roller balls from a computer mouse. I shake it about 20-30 times and that reduces it to powder. I leave it like that and keep shaking a few more times each time I roll one. By the end of that container the bottom is caked with kief, which looks loaded with trichs under a magnifying glass.

So .... when I buy my Bubble box I will continue to use this to break it down before screening, but now I will definitely try putting the roller balls between two screens in hopes of reducing the effort required.

What meshes?
Basic stuff and I've long wanted finer ones. The coarse one is 4mm then the 2nd one is 1mm, (same mesh as mosquito screen), and the finest is 180 micron so I'm not getting full melt bubble for sure. :)

I use the first two screens to reduce the size of the pot bits then put small scoops in the last one and shake it just for a half minute or so to get mostly trich heads without too much plant material. I also make oil and mixing the two make some really decent black hash. 1g oil to about 4 or 5g dry sift. About to make a bunch soon with the trim from my last two crops.

When I got them about 27 years ago I didn't even know about dry sift and bubble hash etc. I knew they made hash in Afghanistan and Lebanon by beating pot plants over screens then pressing the powder into bricks. Smoked shitloads of Blond Leb and other pressed hash back in the late 60s, early 70s in Vancouver. I worked in a gas station when I was 15 and these Italian bikers that used to come in for gas were my connection for most things drug related. I'd buy my goods off them then sell them at my junior high school. I was about the only student who rode a 10 speed to school and became to be known as the Peddling Pusher. I kinda made bikes cool and by the end of the school year there was about 50 bikes in the racks every morning. That was 1969/70.

:peace:

That makes sense to me...I like the idea of using finer meshes progressively....what's supposed to be the correct mesh size?

Just check out the meshes used for bubble bags. The stuff caught between about 76 and 45microns seems to be the best for full melt bubble but I'm not certain. What gets thru the 45 is the fine crystalline hairs that you don't want and the stuff above the 76 will have more junk in it tho is still good smoke. I get it all in my rig. :)

150-180 micron is good for sift being used for edibles and yields better. For smoking anything under 75 micron tends to go full melt. I use 180 screen as 99% of my sift is used for edibles. You'll get some minor green stuff come through with the odd strain (depends on the size of the trichs for the strain) but it's not bad and not a big issue for edibles.

That's exactly what I want to use it for...making edibles.
I tried a bunch of different sizes and settled on the 180 for a decent balance between quality and yield. If I were smoking it regularly I'd go smaller but if I want to smoke hash I have a perpetual jar with enough black finger hash to knock down an elephant ;)

Can a person buy keif and how much does it cost?
Generally no....

At least in all my years of partaking ive never seen it for sale anywhere.

I will share my kief with friends though and i think most who grow do the same... its too good to give up to just anyone...

I wouldnt pay more that $10 gram, $60 a 1/4 and so on and i dont care if its made from trim or flower... its pretty much the same. The only reason concentrates made from flower cost more is because they try to match what could be had from sellingnit as flower + a few extra for porcessing effort.

IE: if you take a $200 ounce of good flower and turn it into say 5 grams high end bubble then the seller will want probably $50 gram. Itll probably last you as long as the ounce because you dont have to so smoke as much for the same effect. BUT its so damned good youll smoke more....lol

I have rosin made on a small scale and it is pretty tasty. But no more so than kief imho.

The rosin ive had thats made on a large scaled is like anything made on a large scale.... the quality/taste deteriorates...

My 2cents...

Ah, once again envy rears its ugly head. :o

I do envy that you can make better hash than I can buy, and I am buying the good stuff. I look forward to being able to make my own.

The WA state rec stores carry kief and hash but it's a specialty item, just for old hippies like me, I guess.
I don't patronize the stores very often (47% taxation) but this is a good blond for $35/gram including tax:

Leafly.com menus will list this stuff under Concentrates but it can be hard to spot among all the other extracts.
