LED question compared to 1000 HPS

OK I. have been reading these threads on LED lighting and always wanting to try something new, I figured I better ask a few questions first. Lets start off with Im growing(scrog) in three 4x4x6 tents and in each tent I run a 1000 HPS, I know its a little overkill but it does the job quite nicely and gives me large quality buds. I do not want to increase or reduce the sizes of the tents. I dont have a problem with heat. Im just looking for something new. Since I scrog it isnt a real issue to get much penetration as everything is on top of the screens and level. My questions are: what size LED would be comparable to a 1000 HPS? Would there be a expected reduction in electric usage to maybe cut the electric bill a bit? Quality matters, so would a LED be comparable to what im running now. DIY is fine. Any suggestions or comments

You will need 500 to 600 watts of quality LED to replace a 1000 HPS. The best current option is DIY using high bin Cree CXA3070's and it's pretty easy to build. My second pick would be 4 Area 51 RW's or XGS's,third would be Apache Tech AT600 and forth would be Onyx. I just yielded over 1.3 grams per watt using Cree CXA3070 3000k Z4 COB's at 30 watts a sq/ft. You have a lot of reading to do but the info is here in this forum and this will get you started.

I personally hate LED, but a lot of people swear by it. It will not give you anywhere near the amount of bud as a 1000 Watt HID system though. It's foot print it VERY tight, meaning not more than 3 plants per fixture. It's advantages are that it produces a lot less heat, and you can place the light close to the plant, but not too close, as it will bleach your plant. They work OK, but If you are getting away with the heat now, I say save your money and invest in a good vent system, which is hard for a tent although. As the Captain mentions, there is a lot of info available on this site, and everything that I have said by is my own personal opinion, which actually doesn't mean that much. I grew under a 740 w LED for 3 cycles, 3 plants and was not happy. As a matter of fact, anyone interested in a 740 watt, Advanced LED, it's yours for the cost of shipping. PM me and it's yours. Good luck, and peace out.

That's the problem with the LED market,it's flooded with under performing low quality panels. The mistake most people make is trying to save a couple bucks and buying one of these panels. If your not willing to pay for quality in LED I would go with CMH.
