LEDs on printed circuit boards

So my latest obsession is the samsung/b-lux eb strips and obviously the quantum boards are setting the world on fire.

Cutter has these xpe/xpg strips with poke-in connectors in all the flavors of the rainbow and rapidLED has these solderless HE 660 nm photo reds that would be fun to play with.

Does anyone have sources of other high quality plug-n-play strips or monos they would like to share?

Personally I'm less interested in (but not entirely opposed to) buying a toaster oven and reflow soldering my own strips and more interested paying someone who has better gear to make bespoke strips to order. Maybe you know where this place exists?

I like the strip format because its less fiddly than wiring/soldering a bunch of individual monos but still allow for better spread and spectrum tweaking than cobs or boards.

My eventual goal is a drawer full of 2' strips mounted to aluminum bars in various cct's and mixed/single wavelengths to drop into a frame.

You can also try to talk with @OLD MOTHER SATIVA he found a manufacturer, which made the strips according to his specifications.(thicker PCB's, more LED's, also 561c diodes, but don't know minimum amounts
Also Mark from cutter would be one to speak to. He dropped some hints about 2-3 weeks ago about possibly producing a PCB board based setup with diodes similar in idea to a QB. He was trying to gauge interest in them and what people would want. let me see if i can find that post or two.

P. S. One of these days i hope you will realize nogod, im far from stupid, spoonfed and a cancer. Im dyslexic and sometimes i need help and multiple explanations to understand something when learning via written format. I can guarentee ive already contributed just as much or more than ive recieved around here.

I'm building a seedling/bonsai mother light with these strips right now. What's your opinion on spacing over a 2x4 ft shelf, at 6-12 inches from the plants? I am designing for 3 strips per 2 x 2, but wondering if it's too much. These double-row TCI strips are frigging bright. I'm planning to adding a switch to give me options to light 1, 2 or 3 strips but am starting to wonder if I'll ever use all 3.

And for all the angst over Bridgelux and Samsung, these TCI strips are very efficient, and come with their own drivers. And the Estonians are easy to work with, even from the US. Recommended.

I'm also in touch with a Chinese supplier of the 561c chips that is preparing a quote on building some custom boards and/or strips. Minimum order amounts are going to be the hitch here (fabricating the boards is pretty basic stuff), maybe the folks here that are interested can pool together an order if these guys come back with a decent proposal.

Nothing wrong with your setup, spacing should be good! You can also change the included driver and use a HLG-80H-C350B(257v/350mA/dimmable) for up to 5 strips in series. But switches will also do the job.

Great, and thanks for the driver info. I've been a bit in the dark on these strips w/out a datasheet.

The Chinese board fabricator I'm in touch with wants a basic PCB design in order to prepare a quote. Does anyone in the group have any chops in EDA they'd like to offer to the cause?

My thinking is this is the chance to put the collective experience of everyone together to create a next-gen board using the 561C chips. What size board and form factor? What type of board material? What diode number, spacing and pattern? Circuit design - series, parallel, parallel strings wired in series? And since we are designing from the diode level, what driver should the board design be matched to? Seems with a little input from everyone we could hack out a design tuned to our needs in no time.

My initial thinking is:

Prime specs: distributed light in the range of 70-80% of the PFFD maximum density for cannabis, over a 3x3 ft canopy at 18-36 inches distance from the lamp. Form factor and PCB materials require no or minimal additional heat dissipation. PCB circuit matched to an efficient, well-priced and commonly available quality Mean Well driver.

Size/shape: 18x18 inch square (distributed light is the major benefit of mid-power diodes over COBs, so let's take advantage of this.)

PCB material: Aluminum backed, or possibly copper-backed, for heat dissipation. Ideally, will eliminate or decrease additional dissipation requirements to a level that can be serviced with simple aluminum strips and sheets. I'm still getting up to speed on PCB options.

Diode layout: 200-250 chips, evenly spaced in rows. What are the manufacturer's tolerances and recommendations here? How close is too close? I think spacing does not need to be as tight as a quantum board if we can do away with a dedicated heat sink. Once we introduce heat sinks, cost=form factor x aluminum shipping+material costs.

Circuit design: I know most folks here string their lights in series to avoid the dreaded thermal runaway events with a big COB failure. However, with multi-diode lights, the load imbalance from any one diode failing is far less onerous for the rest of the circuit to bear - easily within the maximum specs if the light is already running well within tolerances.
COBs use several diode strings in parallel, with each string wired in series, which gives the COB the protection of series circuitry with the advantage of parallel allowing for a few diodes to fail without blacking out the entire light. With 250 diodes wired in a single series, the first diode that fails - which they will - will kill the whole lamp, and require a bit of sleuthing with a meter to find the dead chip. So it seems the COB design of mixed parallel/series circuits makes sense here as well. Would love to hear others' thoughts on this though.

Anybody have a favorite free/open source basic PCB design app? I know of KiCAD and Eagle, but they seem far too complex for building a simple LED board mockup. I only have so much life force to dedicate to obtuse software mastery :wink:

they were just beside the "Sinner Panel" samples i had made

before i actually got the size changed from Sinner Panel--->7" x11"

to the size i really wanted but was too lazy to do..-------> 6" x 22" @250w..[ in production]
