light fitting question, making one?

Ok, if I was to connect the following materials and plug into mains would it work, or blow up and electrocute me?
One light fitting(the type dangling down from the wire in your roof)
One plug
And connecting the two with twin + earth wire
Could I just connect and plug in or do I need some sort of resistor?
