I agree w/ the first part.
But as far as HPS spectrum & CRI causing this or that, in return getting Less yield. That's just a bunch of Mumbo-Jumbo mostly said by those who read about it but never did it. No offense to you. Long branches grow large colas & allow light to other lower buds.
Something else to consider is those there HPS hoods throw off some pretty good ppfd #'s maintained well w/ spread in which negates allot of that single light source talk too in regards to HPS. Plus their #'s don't drop drastically every 3" down.
HPS spectrum grows the biggest buds w/o a boat load of 660 or 450 w/ low, low CRI.

But I do not like them because of their binnings, I like them because of their concept creating a complete 360° dome.
I would create my own "LED-spheere" using low driven F-Series strips(S6/A1 bins, just because I know, you like bins).
I've only a small area to play with and want to use as much heights of it as I can and this concept allows me to practically use the full volume of my tent(2' x 2'x 6').
That's why I like it!!

actually, i have only grown with HPS for over 20 years, and still do.
The high PPF of the HPS will only be sufficient with short plants,regarding inter-nodal spacing and stem elongation. With bigger plants HPS will induce SAS, again associated with crop yield.
Even Gavita says to supplement their DE with MH for best results.

Regarding your statement of diminishing photon flux, i am not shore if you are referring to led light systems. If you are then i would advice to read this white paper of Cree:

Right on Randomblame the key point being able to make full use of the volume. I have toyed with multi layering and did begin to think about inter-canopy lighting and whether it would be more efficient than multi layering, then I came across hybrids thread and was like wow what a cool concept.
With regards to terpene production also look into Jasmonic Acid - Methyl Jasmonates

Never heard of an 8-12,000k blue sky. 57k is approx spring/afternoon sky. Enhance that with reds & 420 & ur good to go.
Blue is way underrated in flower. Especially 420.
