Lighting questions

I was contemplating maybe growing one or two plants and have a few questions about lighting. I have a lamp that i used for my snake before I got rid of him, would I be able to pop a HPS bulb into the fixture or will that not work? I have one of those spiral 10w flourescent lights that I could use in addition to lots of natural light, but I get the feeling that the consensus is that's not enough light. So If that fixture won't work for HPS, would one flouro bulb in that fixture work? (in addition to the natural light) What sort of wattage should I be aiming for either for flouro or HPS? I'm going to just stick with one light from start to finish if that helps. Thanks in advance

HI Gem..

If you use (1-6) 42watt CFLS from wal mart or home depot.. you will have a tremendous grow..

cheers

Hello. I've researched that for lighting, HPS is most agreed upon as the best choice. So I got a 70w HPS bulb at lowes. Well I Put it in a common light socket with the intention of it working, but it didn't. It says that I need the correct ballast and fixture. How exactly does the ballast work for it? And where would I get the ballast? And if/when I get it to work, how much will one 70w assembly make the electric bill go up? Alot or not alot? This has gotten a little more complicated than I originally thought. Thanks. I look forward to your reply.
