I was still flowering with it until a few months ago when I downsized a bit. My veg cob fell and broke while I was messing with things so I am now vegging with one. Shit was revolutionary (overpriced.. maybe lol.. If I had to do it all over again I probably would buy a 315 cmh instead) when it first came out but gotta admit I was glad when cobs (and then QBs) made diy plug-n-play.

No, I have never seen an A51 light in person. was just curious as they looked to be a pretty nice piece.
A shame that company has kinda fizzled out when they were so high up in the led world just a couple years ago..

Def one of the best diode lamps. Dude who ran it started getting a little full of himself, posting screen shots of his paypal and talking shit to potential customers etc, and it seemed like when COB tech came around he just wasn't able to keep up with competition. It really was a shame because when he was first starting out he seemed like a real cool and approachable dude. Guess he just wasn't built for it.. Another victim of success some would say.

Honestly, I think he got what he deserved. The way he treated people was downright shitty. That's something you can get away with when you're just another nameless schmoe on the internet, but if you're running a business, that bullshit catches up eventually.

I think the current tech in LED is nothing short of amazing. Those who couldn't keep up should be remembered for their contributions, I have a hard time bashing people for their shortcomings.
I say this because I believe I have the makings of the next step forward in LED lighting. I'm also aware that it may be well superceded, and I may or may not be able to keep up...
Keeps things in perspective for me.

Water cooled LED is the next step forward. It won't make much difference in hobby grows but when dealing with commercial facilities, the electricity expended on climate control exceeds that used by the lighting. An integrated approach has the ability to drastically reduce overall energy consumption, to the point where growing garden vegetables becomes economically viable.

With prices dropping and under driving the LEDs for better efficiency, passive cooling in an open space with good air flow is probably more attractive. Just run the math for yourself. 25-35w/ft2 delivered by 1 cob/ft2 is feasible when you are looking at 350-400/ft2 capital cost for a facility. Active cooling introduces more complexity and another thing to worry about.
All depends on temperatures of the area you are in. Up north we don't have a heat problem to deal with. Having said that, I could see cobs being attached to a misting system over the grow areas so it could be a great idea in the end.

Using 100% of an input is always more efficient than using only part of it.
Also, maintaining consistent conditions is the main reason why growing inside is so much more efficient than outdoor approaches, and venting makes this do much more difficult that it's usually not cost effective.
Again, it's a scale issue. Small grows don't suffer from the same issues with climate control that large facilities do.

Yeah which is why air cooling works just as well, the heat is kept within the environment which will offset heating costs for colder environments. It comes down to where you are located and the environmental factors you have to deal with. For warmer environments where you need to move that extra 1-2c increments from running LED soft, water cooling could make sense.
