Mothers are simple upkeep... Flush them every couple of months, but basically maintain the veg cycle. You won't find any benefits using hydro over soil when it comes to mother plants...

Yup,soil is the ticket,on a mother plant is the only time i use very large pots,i also make a very rich soil mix for them being that they are going to be alive so long.

I don't like being tied to a watering schedule. I like DWC. Simple and effective. Once dialed in, it's reasonably unattended for 2-4 days.

Dude, if you want a mother you can have mine, she's a giant pain in the ass. While your at it, you might as well take my mother in law too :-)

I keep my moms in a rubermaid tub setup in dirt. Flower chamber is hydro. As long as they are in good sized pots, Moms can go unattended for quite a while.

so how do you start a mother? to you get it to show sex by putting it in 12/12 and then putting it back to 18/6? or do you just have to get it from another mother/clone?

PLants show preflowers when they are mature. You have to wait for this to happen ... OR you can take a cutting from your hopeful lady and drop it in 12/12 as soon as it has roots. That way you know if you have a female to use as a clone mama.

theres this other method too. you take 2 black trash bags. cut it down to a smaller sleeve (double layered). then you put it over one of your mother's branch and emulate 12 hour on and 12 hour and it'll show it's sex while the whole plant grows. once you know. just take it off and let it grow :p
