6 ounces of tincture at a shot is the way to go, if you happen to have 30 grams of hash laying around :-o

Test drove my new tincture today.

Tincture safety tip : Try out the potency of a new tincture on a weekend day lol

When you run the goo thru a coffee filter are you using a 'permanent gold' style mesh? Is there any gunk left after you run it thru the filter? I think Vitamin Cottage has the glycerin and maybe the bottles. Can I use the wet hash I made today? Got any tips for another pioneer? Had enough questions?

Yes, I bought a permanent gold filter from Wally World for 5 bucks. Oh yes, plenty of gunk left... Med doesn't squeeze his out, just lets it sit over night, but I squeezed mine out. Vitamin cottage has the glycerin and the bottles. One tip that Med didn't mention, but that is a necessity IMO is one of those funnels made to fit the mouth of the 1/2 pint mason jar, that way the filter has a decent place to hang out that isn't too rickety. No reason you can't use wet hash, the little bit of water left should boil off during the first heating session, the temp doesn't get high enough to boil the water off, but I bet it steams off, and if it don't, having a few drops of water in your tincture ain't gonna hurt nothin.

I'm going to have to expand my grow to keep up with my tincture needs. Currently, I think if I maxed my production capacity, I would have just enough buds and trim to stay up with demand, but none left over for smoking :-(

Good point on the jar filling funnel Bubba. That is what I use also.

420c - using wet hash will work fine, you just need to adjust your weight when calculating hash to glycerine ratio so you account for the extra water weight.

I've used both the plastic and gold coffee filters and definitely prefer the gold. It makes for cleaner tincture. The same goes for pressing the gunk vs letting it drain naturally over time. Pressing certainly doesn't "ruin" the tincture but it does force through a bit of material that leaves a few little floaters in the tincture. No big deal, just a matter of preference.

Bubba - I primarily grow for tincture production so I only keep a small amount of flowers for the wife to smoke, sharing with friends, etc. From my last run I hashed up everything but about 4 oz of flowers. I'm guessing I would have had a pound of flowers if I didn't do the tincture.

Testing a new batch of tincture can be an adventure. :-)

Once you get to know your strains and are consistent in your hash making process the variability is much reduced. I feel like I stay within about a 10% range on potency these days. I definitely had some wild rides in the early days of dose experimentation though...

Thanks for the tips and the picture helps a lot. I cooked down 4 grams of ice water hash that has been curing by breaking it up in a 4 oz jar, added about 2 1/2 oz Everclear, placed into a water bath crock pot, set to high, watched temp go from 150-180 for an hour, then when I checked it at 2 hours found it 177 degrees and dry. The lid was sitting on the jar, but the hash was looking like a cracked lava field. So I added 2 oz of glycerin and will heat it up in the morning for 4 hours, but will keep closer eye on it. Probably fine, just well done. The wet hash batches weigh 24 and 26 grams so I'll let them dry a bit before cooking them down. Appreciate the info here, this is turning into quite a project, looking forward to the test drive.

Got lots of 'goo' left over, what is it good for?
tincture 001.jpg tincture 003.jpg Made 2/3 oz of finished product with 4 grams of well cured hash. Started with a couple drops dosage, the verdict is not yet in on best dose yet, should have a good idea in a few days. Thanks for posting the technique, I'll run a second, larger batch next week and will def get the funnel as juggling the funnel-filter-bottle was too entertaining. Maybe the goo would be good to use in edibles or caps?

What sort of dosage amounts are you using? Are there any side effects from ingesting the glycerine?

It really seems a waste to toss the goo, I capped the jar and am mulling over options. I could toss it in with the next trim batch for bubble hash. Planning to make up another batch in a few days. I like that this process is not difficult and not too time consuming.

Yes it goes pretty easy since Med worked it all out. The glycerin should be food grade... I guess if you drank the whole bottler you'd probably shit like a goose for awhile..... :D

Dosage for me is 1/2 dropper in the morning then another full dropper every few hours till I get to a position that I can vape.

I'm making some maximum potency coco oil caps for my FL trip. Figure I can pass them off as fish oil pills. ~ 100mg per cap. One's good med, two is nice high, 3 is couch lock, 4 is trippin..... for me anyways. 9g of fine Treehouse bubble in ~ 70 caps. Disney here I come lol.

shout out to da Treehouse for hookin me up with all of that hash plus some Harlequin - 12%CBD.

I've got never tried recycling the goo. Let us know if you try it out and how it works.

The goo is hash solids suspended in glycerin, so adding it to budder to use in brownies probably makes the most sense. Should be fine as long as it gets broken down and not remain a single 'surprise package' in a brownie.

Ok, so I got to it again this morning, and made the following to try for fun/experiment/an upcoming Rockies game:

    1) I took a few grams worth of shake and put it in a jar with just enough everclear to really cover it. I shook it around for about 30 seconds (per Sirdabsalot's suggestion on another thread), then filtered into a pyrex dish through a coffee filter. I then (using my fancy little tea strainer) squeezed out as much of the liquid as I could. I then rewashed the shake (again, per SDA) and ran it through the filter again. This left me with a neon green liquid, which I was sort of surprised by, as I'd only washed with the shake for about 30 seconds.

    20130718_090042.jpg

    2) I then double boiled off the alcohol, at around 225 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40 minutes.

    20130718_092607.jpg 20130718_092552.jpg

    3) I didn't take pictures of this, but I then added more water (as most of it had boiled off too) to the bottom of the double boiler, and added about a tablespoon's worth of honey. I let it cook a bit more, at around 180F, for another 20 minutes or so, then pulled it off to cool.

    20130718_105101.jpg

    4) Once it cooled, my wife an I each ate about a quarter teaspoon's worth...and now we feel good! I can only imagine what a full teaspoon's worth would do! Not to mention, as much as I love smoking a bowl, it's really awesome to get a nice high without the smoke.

Anyway, it looks like the honey worked well enough (rather than glycerin), but we'll see how well it holds up over the next couple days. If anything interesting happens with it, I'll make sure to report back, but for now, I'm thoroughly pleased! And, a special thanks to Medshed and SirDabsAlot, from whom I've learned a ton!

    Cheers!

Not to sound square, but I've had to cut back on my tincture & edible consumption. By the end of vacation, I was eating about a gram a day of high quality activated hash oil /coco pills. I started out the week taking 250-500mg... Not to mention consuming a highly potent fluid ounce of tincture during the same trip.

So I got home and was having the sweats like when I kicked perocets and back in the day when i layed down blow. After a few days, I'm back to being able to go to bed high and wake up sober and go to work without sweating. That's the first physical withdrawal symptoms that I've ever had with marijuana. Just got to find your balance I reckon.

Thanks for tellin' it like it is Bubba, today I got a call from an old employer to see if I'd like to make more money by changing jobs. This will require a piss test at a time when I just made more, stronger tincture and am experimenting with daily oil dosage, got a new vape and am re-learning how to roll a decent joint. The RSO after dinner, waking up with the Mojave Desert in my mouth at 3AM and being foggy brained in the morning tells me the dosage is not right. Latest tincture batch was 3/4 ounce with 8 1/2 grams of bubble hash baked in the oven for 20 minutes at 250F. The great thing about the tincture is that it really keeps you regular, that glycerine has a laxative side effect, kind of like what is now called a 'cleanse'. I have to stop all cannabis now for at least 30 days if I hope to pass the test, even then it is not a guarantee. First I've heard mention of sweats, good luck with that, wonder how long that symptom lasts. Have you considered switching to exclusively high CBD products, less THC, smaller doses and limits on consumption? I have a rule to beer, none before 5PM and none after 9PM, a self imposed limit that has taught me to drink beer faster. Oh, and no more than 4 beers in a day and not more than 5 days a week. And I don't drink cheap brews. Point is setting limits on intake helps to avoid the 'slippery slope'.

So, are you going to sell off that bubble machine for cheap?

Love the thread Medshed. I make tinctures and oils and such myself. I love the method you use. Question...Do you put the lid on the crock pot while alcohol is being evaporated? Or Questions I should say lol...I used dry ice hash, I need quantity over quality, and can tweak it a bit to make it more potent. My ?? is do you know the ratio of dry ice hash to trim or bud ( I know 1 oz bud = 4 oz good trim) for making butter? I would like to switch from using trim to using dry ice hash but don't know the ratio equivalent. Any help would be appreciated.
next ? I don't know where to find everclear, what alcohol would you recommend to use instead?

As for the left over goo...use it! I usually add it to a jar of peanut butter. Or cookies if I need them stronger for a high tolerance patient. Anything really, though it doesn't do too well in chocolates - makes it seize up. That's okay though, cuz you can just turn it into a truffle ;)

Much rep to you hun ;)

Thanks for the kind words fumble.

I do keep the lid on the crock when evaporating the alcohol. It helps minimize the amount of water vapor that escapes the crock when heated, thereby reducing the need to top up the crock water.

You can use vodka in place of the Everclear but your cook time will need to increase. Since vodka has more water in it you need to evaporate the alcohol and boil off the water.

Sorry, I haven't cooked with dry ice hash or straight bud/trim enough to recommend a ratio between them. Dry ice hash will definitely be stronger (of course). I guess you'll just need to experiment until you find the right dose. Experimenting with dosage is always fun anyway... :-)

Thanks for the tip on goo reuse. I'll have to give the peanut butter trick a try.
    :peace:

thanks for replying Medshed :) It sure is fun to experiment! so by using the water bath to evaporate the alcohol, is it safer? Do I need to do it near an open window or vent? I have had my jar of lemoncello so long because I am scared of it lol. It will make a killer martini that's for sure! Good info about letting the vodka cook longer too, thanks. Maybe I should find Tickle and see if he can spot me some Shine lol

I do the double boiler method because it is less messy/easier to clean up than cooking directly in the crock pot. It might be safer too, but I don't know. I do cook next to an open window as well. Honestly, I'm not so worried about safety with the small volume of everclear I use. I wouldn't leave the house while it cooks but I don't think it is going to blow anything up. Fire seems like the biggest potential problem.
