Be that as it may, the anecdotal evidence is all but overwhelming. A guy recently completed a run under a 630W (from the wall) Johnson Grow Lights Maximizer and pulled 950g of really pretty product.

So IMO there's a pattern emerging, where under the right conditions 600W of COB LED matches the results of 1000W of HID.
Exactly.

I will be at the SCCC&Expo (southren california cannabis conference) i was at canna expo this year as well.

People are still burned by the burlpe LED damage. then try and telll'em about the newer tecnologies. soon as you say LED, and the wall goes up. its hard to explain to a person who invested thosuands in this wonderful new lighting in 2008 only to get burned. they have not forgotten, they have alot of vaild information. they want to set it and forget it. I have never set foot in an all LED lit facility. (I see lots of photoshop ones) i have seen T5's dropped for LED in propagation/clones. its enough to change bulbs in your main, getting under smaller spaces and reaplacing tubes on 1-12+ 8 bulb T5 fixtures is a hassle. its just less work, then a less power thing.

I have seen a slight, meh, at least conceding that at home in a small(er) grows see the LED as an (better?) option. LED is much more fun to: hobby/breed/pheno hunt with, then a large HPS/MH set ups. LEDS are more fun, i think thats important, less worry means more time for creativity and risk taking.

but when you have a 6k+ light bill you just dont want to fuck around you go with the solid.

so from my feet on the ground, the biggest changes are from SE to DE and T5 to LED.

I think CMH is (gettting more) popular becasue: its cheaper then a good LED light, and uses less power then a cheaper HPS light. I think from a $ angle CMH lights, cost less, use less power+Bulb life. they have thier niche too. I can see some dank being done in a 3x6 under 2 315's. total set up cost $1500. guessing yields in the 480-520g range. by novice hobbist.

Something tells me those folks arent just breeding/pheno hunting in mommy's basement...

This is where it gets interesting.

Transitioning from a completely straightforward, hang-it-up-and-turn-it-on single source with a very narrow range of application, to an absolute jungle of potential configurations.

The trials I want to see are
LED mfg vs LED mfg
Spectrum vs Spectrum
Cobs vs mono
Sidelighting vs without
........I couldnt give 2shits about an "honest" HID/LED side by side.

Gavita knows that their sole advantage is price and cree is just trying to make their "HPS killer" look cheaper than it is.

In 2015 it was cheaper for me to build an LED fixture and run it for 3 years than it was for me to buy a comparable DE HPS and run it for 3 years.

In a year (probably less) it will be cheaper for me to build an LED fixture than to buy a comparable DE HPS.

In 2 years (probably less) it will be cheaper for me to buy an LED fixture off amazon than to buy a comparable DE HPS.

Why are we still talking about Gavita as if they are relevant?
Funny you should say that. I understand Gavita is heavy into an R&D cycle with the aim of coming out with a fixture that matches current COB LED performance with a DE HPS footprint at an aggressively competitive price point.

This squares with my gut feelings and other news about Gavita rather well; they just sold 70% of themselves to Hawthorne Group. Who would buy an obsolete lighting company? On the other hand, what if Gavita needs the money to develop their designs and supply chain? Suddenly, it all makes sense.

My guess is that Gavita is developing COB LED fixtures and is even now working out the relative costs in order to bring a light with world beating performance to market.

Maybe in two years, the LED light you're buying will have the Gavita brand name on it.

I went from SE HPS on mag ballasts to 860W CDM Allstart lamps on the same magnetic ballasts. I did not get efficiency but I did get better spectrum and lamp life. I've since upgraded to 315W CMH lights with LFSW ballasts and I've recently scrounged a thousand watt LFSW digital ballast and I'm running an 860W CDM lamp on that now.

All the above is jockeying for second place. COB LED is in a class by itself by every measure save the initial investment and as such pays for itself many times over during its use.

People say they can tell the difference between LED and HID grown product from across the room. They always pick right so I've little choice but to take them at their word, lol Besides, it does look different; denser, frostier, more colorful.

are you running canopy10 at 510w +-? do you have walls exact 4x4 distance? what was their reflection material? outside area is really dark. thx for reply

here is the PAR map for the Canopy10. as hard as I tried spread these cobs out, its still brightest in the center, but only 100µmol - ish. Im really happy with the config so far, its the most even canopy Ive ever had in this room. each of the 9 plant positions is receiving a very similar avg PPF. measurements taken at 18"

where my thread at? :joint::sleep::sleep::sleep:

@hyroot ive always been a fan of yours. but now that im personally seeing the results of your recommended mix, ur my ninja.

I love people that are really passionate about LEDs and LED growlights, even if they get really stoned and recommend T5s to someone @Airwalker16 :spew:

oh yeah, i made rosin out my CCP, the flowers are pretty strong, but the extracts lead to videos like this:
