Hello everyone got a question about gnats and dwc systems. Long story short my wife has a compost bin and uses organic dirt. Well we ended up having gnats from them either fungus or soil not to sure. I have a grow tent in another room with a 6 inch fan and scrubber. I placed a pail with water in it the other day and I came back today to see 5 gnats dead in it. I examined the plant there is only one little leaf with a sign of any marks and I pushed the hydrton rocks back and see one flying. I checked my rez and I didn't see any in there. I also checked my plants roots the best I can into the netpot with hydrton and I did'nt see anything in there. Im more worried that the gnats laying eggs and I wouldn't be able to tell. Since I dont see any in the plant other then that one or see any in the rez should I wait and see or is there anything I should do now to prevent any further issue .....I thank everyone for their advice

Those gnats are called fungus gnats. they will devour your newly rooted clones
and prevent/hinder new root productions on cuttings. they love the fungus that grows on
wet substrate and compost piles. keep substrate dry for best results.
use yellow sticky cards to monitor and identify your population while eliminating them.
dont apply to your compost but neem oil is a friend to cannabis growers. A small amount mixed with a drop of soapy water
in your res/substrate/mature vegging plants is good.

the adults wont hurt much at all its the larva on the roots that is the main problem. I use gnatrol, it's bt and bt toxin, everything they lay in your roots dies not long after its first bites. I use a half teaspoon per res change when I first notice em. During the summer I use it nonstop this place is a gnat paradise. Rejoice! Fungus gnats are relatively mild and easily dealt with, though if you don't deal with it theyll get nasty

The yellow fly paper works great for the adults. I put one in each corner of my tent and wasn't catching very many, even though I could see them all over my soil and pots. So I put some near the pots on zip ties ( I have zip ties on my pots for lst)
And caught nearly all of them in a couple days. There are still a few but they're a shadow of their former selves lol. I also used peroxide and water (1 part peroxide to 4 parts water) to kill larva in soil but you're doing hydro so not sure if that works tho it may be something to look into.
