Need help with soil problem

Im just trying to grow my first plant as a little fun side thing and if it works out i might get more into it. but the way im trying to grow this first plant is by germinating it and planting it in soil then puttin out on my roof during the light hours of the day so it can grow. i know you shouldnt water every day but the soil dries up sooo fast and gets so hard that i dont see how the plant could sprout through it. any Suddgestions?

okay!! get potting soil!!! or just make sure it is always kinda damp esspecially for germination,

and when you water make sure you water it so good there is some water leakin out the bottom of the pot
