Never top an autoflower plant. Right?

No shit? I'm running some diy COBs myself. Mine come out at 212w. I only have the two plants under it right now but I have two other 6 day old seedlings so I'm thinking I might need to add some more COBs.

These two are jock horrors from nirvana and they're at 41 days. They still haven't begun to flower but honestly I'm glad because they seem so small still

How close do you keep your lights? My plants started out like that so I keep them at ~30" now to promote a little stretch. That cheese was real PIA to water.

Check out the 220w Mephisto grow thread in the auto section. He's growing 4 plants and aiming for a lb. Good stuff.

I attribute the growth rate to the AutoCobs. I have 6 totaling 330w and I'm getting crazy growth and branching compared to my last grow under 400w HID. It's a phenomenal difference in my experience.

Between this cheese and the 2 amnesia I should be looking at near or over a lb from 3 plants. Fingers crossed for the amnesia's to outweigh the Cheese as they have like 6-8 colas about the size of my forearm each.

This is only my 2nd grow so it's certainly not my superior growing skills producing these plants. :bigjoint:
Ohhh shit. I have trouble keeping up and completely forgot you were using them. Thrilled to see the results bro.

I keep them like 8" from the plant...is that too close?

few question if I may

I grown cheese before (green house fem seed)
nice plant, bit short. overall the main cola looks similar to the side branches.
I never grown auto cheese so I am not sure how the auto cheese looks
how is the other auto cheese you grown? they have main cola?

about 10 years ago I helped farmer friend cutting basil in his green house.
after 2 hours of work he took all what we cut and throw it in the garbage.
"why?" I asked him, he said he had no buyer for it.
"so why we cut it?" I asked him, he said he have to or the basil will grow flowers and then it's no good.
I am not sure autoflower will behave this way.
did you noticed this topped cheese finish later compare to others?
maybe by topping autoflower you increase side branching but delay flowering by week or two

thanks for sharing

Science?

"Never top an auto." ~ People.

We see this all the time. Fact? Fiction? Myth? Tales of yore?

Let's find out.

disclaimer: I'm not a scientist. I have received no training. I have little experience. I have no personal protection equipment on hand and I've likely already smoked myself silly. Do not try this without stoner supervision.

Let's begin, shall we.

I don't just believe everything I'm told. If it came from the internet, even less. I take risks. Life is a game. Chance is involved. To win, you gotta play. If you play you can lose. I wanna play. So here goes.

Canuck seeds auto cheese topped @ day 26. Why? Free seed! Let's kill it! K, sorry no earlier pics. I did this on a whim because I switched to COB lighting and was experiencing exponential growth.

Don't mind the stakes. I did no LST on this plant at all. The stakes give a pretty good reference of growth. They're 14" taller than the bucket. Watch them disappear before you're very eyes.

Sprouted on 3/6. Topped 4/1. First pic was taken 4/14

So there we have it. So far, so good. She's in full flower now. Issues with this soil again but whatever. The only visibly slowed growth was the top. It's since caught back up and risen above the side branches.

I'm a little concerned with the number of bud sites and her finite life span. We'll see what happens there.

My only regret is NOT having another untouched cheese growing for comparison. C'Est la vie.

Science!
Yea some autos do very well topped. @hondagrower420, no longer on the site, had some bad ass auto grows that were topped.

Plants look good by the way.

The thought occurred to me. If I had another space to put it in, I would.

I want to make my own seeds and I will when I have enough filled jars to get me by. :bigjoint:

With the small space I have I plan to do a SOG style seed run. I'm saving 1-2 seeds from every pack I have just to make seeds. Just gotta figure out what strain I want to use for pollen. 12-20 pollinated auto fems in 1 gallon grow bags should give me years worth of beans in 60- 80 days. :leaf:
Save some pollen and use a small paint brush to brush the pollen on a few lower limbs. You get seeds and don't mess the best buds up.

She was at 26 days above soil. Pretty sure she was at 5 nodes. I hadn't planned to do it. Topping was a reaction to how well she was growing. I couldn't resist.

I will say, she is an utter pain to water and it's going to get worse as her branches stiffen up. lol

I have a sinking feeling she's gonna make a LOT of tiny bud. I hope I'm wrong.
That has been my experience with autos. If you top then you get more bud sites but smaller buds. Not topped, you get less bud sites but bigger buds. I have found LST and scrog growing with an untopped auto works best for me.

91 days for an auto seems kind of long doesn't it? I mean i finish my photo plants faster than that...
Not for the bigger autos.

Large pots and grow feeds extend the veg time and size on autos.
That's not really true, they just have a life span that's not controlled by lighting, i have had photo plants that are ten times the size any auto could ever get with vigor an auto could never have, vigor and growth rate is determined by genetics and environment, auto's generally grow much smaller and show sex / flower earlier than photoperiod plants, that doesn't mean they are gonna grow bigger in the same time period, in my experience they grow smaller due to their lack of veg time and genetics(ruderalis is a TINY plant , and that's what autos are).
You are thinking of older auto strains. The newer bigger autos go 90-100 days and hit 3-5 foot tall. Why do you always come to auto threads just to bash them? I get it. You grew some and were not impressed. There are tricks to growing them. They are just as potent. Plenty test in the 20% range.
Smaller eh? 5'8" auto's for ya. Sounds like you should pay more attention to the autoflower section. You've already contradicted yourself.

Basically there was no main cola. After topping her all the side branches grew just as tall. The tops were all bud. Topping her did not affect time to finish at all. The only bad thing (if you want to call it that) is most of the bud came out to be finger sized after drying. 6.3 oz is 6.3 oz no matter the bud size.

I have not grown an untopped auto cheese for comparison yet, but I plan to let one go naturally pretty soon just to see if I get close to the same weight.

6.3 oz from an auto is very impressive. I have 2 auto cheese and two auto amnesia from Canuck. I might have to run them next round.

I topped a cheese auto too! Just in 2 spots. That girl is such a vigorous grower I can't find the spots I topped. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck .
Anyway mine is way bushy, along with a Quarter Pounder.
@Creature1969 you mind if I drop a pic of'em on your thread?

My amnesia auto from Canuck didn't take well to the LST.... She grew into a tiny shrub, great smoke. Has a piney evergreen taste, very smooth and abut uplifting. I would definitely grow the cheese auto againimage.jpg

Cheese Auto and Quarter Pounder from Canuck seeds. They are the two on the left in 5gal pots. Seeds sprouted November 20-22, really strong growers. The sickly one in the back is an orphan from bag seedy gat happened to be an auto. and the other is a King Tut photoperiod gonna be tons of tips on her

I found the quarter pounder a very nice smoke. Very good sativa effect in an auto. I also had great luck with trans siberian (basically auto amnesia from a different vendor). That was one of my favorite tasting smokes of all time. And auto trans siberian is STRONG. Autos really do have their place in your tent !

Have you tried the bloody skunk ? I grew it but it was very small I'm going to try them again because I like the flavor and the appearance of the bud
