New Breeding Standard.

Its always nice to share information, if you actually get the full article...

Looks really interesting-> cause a mutation in father and cross with mother -> father genes won't be passed, just haploid mother chromosomes which replicate themselves to become diploid (complete and fertile homozygous).

I wonder what kind of mutation needs to be done to one of the parents, and at what level. This starts getting into "Is it genetically modified or not?" territory. Yet could also be a positive natural reaction to attempted modification... what category does that fall into.

I wish those white papers were free, I just want to skip over em, read intro and conclusion.... (never mind, not science papers but magazine article describing science papers costs money, Im off to google now)

This could be very useful and the new standard in breeding, I will post the results from the Journal soon as I get them on how this process is carried out.

Well this is definitely GMO in my book if it isn't in the science books as well. BUT as a breeder I see a goldmine waiting to be made with this one. The key paragraph is:

"After eliminating half the chromosomes, Chan and Ravi had to stimulate the plants to double their remaining chromosomes so that they would have the correct diploid number. Plants with the haploid number of chromosomes are sterile."

So basically you can take any pheno that you want, make it create seeds that will produce offspring identical to the selected cultivar, and then sell them. They will grow and look just like their parents, only they're sterile and no one can ever produce seeds from that line again.

I mean, right now there's feminized seed but you could still breed with em if you really wanted to. With this new method though, all possibility of breeding is stripped out of the offspring.

I'm not saying it's good for the species, but it sounds like a professional cannabis breeder's wet dream if you ask me. I bet you those guys are fucking ecstatic, I know I would be.
