New Grower - short and fat - hydro - Northern Lights

Could use some advice as to where you think I'm at so far with this new grow. Well, it's actually my first real grow outside of a little PC box upon which I have grown a couple little girls in dirt.. Took the opportunity to learn some topping, fimming, and trimming techniques with those little micros last year.

Current system is running in a 5x5 tent with four 5 gallon RDWC with a res day-lighted by a vented hood 1000W MH/HPS positioned 24" above the tallest girl.
Using AN PH Perfect nutes at about 800ppm with Hydroguard as well.
Water temp for the 6 hours dark is 59-62F and daylight at 68-72F.
Tent atmosphere is at 60% humidity and usually runs 5-10F warmer than water which has PH between 5.7-6.2.
There is an oscillating fan and humidifier in the tent.

Have 4 girls in the tent. All one week behind each other due to some bad seeds, lol - user error during seeding. And that's the easiest part - right? lol The back left girl is three weeks old yesterday. Topped it last week and just trimmed the lower branches yesterday. Looks a little less bushier now. I do notice the leave tips on bottom branched have slight dipping toward end. Maybe recovering from trimming yesterday? The one to the right is two weeks old and I just fimmed that one yesterday to see how the outcome will be different than straight out topping. The other two are out of view and as you can expect, very small yet. The strain is Northern Lights. That might be the reason they seem so short and fat. The stems are huge tree like stems though... The stem on the one on the left has passed 1/2 " thick. But, they seem really short for their girth and big leaves. The bottom leaves extend to the outside edges of the bucket. Maybe they will shoot up at flip??? Just appears to be bushing out more than growing up. Maybe going to have to veg longer? I was hoping for a 4 week veg but...

Open to advice. Am I screwing something up here? The pictures are not good. The color of the plants ARE good in person though.

The other strain I've done and it was in dirt was Blueberry and it was tall and skinny with tiny leaves in comparison.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Good or bad..
MC

looks good to me

you might have the start of some mild magnesium def. showing up as leaves slightly torched or twisted

some Epsom salt might be a good addition if your not already using a calmag supplement

It's like its trying to cram a bunch of big leaves on short stems. There isn't enough room for them to stretch out. If I move one branch out of the way of another, the leaves instantly relax and fall into shape. The new growth come out of the chute fast, furious, and twisted. If the plant would just get some length, they would be more relaxed I think. The branches are growing so thick rather than long. It's like the branches are stunted but leaf production is there.

Thanks!

Had a week and a half of stunt. Still rather short and fat. Rebounded after removing a crap load of big fan leaves/stems. They like 750-800 PPMs. 50 from tap water, 25 from Epsom, and the remainder from AN's 3-part. Cloning today as they go into bloom on Friday. Had to veg a little longer on the big momma because the other plants were younger in numeration. I did have a couple burnt tips at feedings. But at the lower PPMs, that might have been caused by the tap water? Anyway, PH always returns to 5.7 after 24 hours no matter what I start with. Water temp has been 71F in the day and 62F at lights out. Humidity has been higher though at 90% and going through 1.5 gallons of water and 20-50 PPMs a day. Still concerned with the short fatness of this strain. So short that there isn't much I can do for training. I just hope they stretch the first couple weeks of bloom. I'll install the nets and hopefully be able to separate so I end up with a good canopy. This batch of Northern Lights must be extra heavy on the indica side as short and stocky as they are. This normal? Based on this setup, anyone know if these will stretch a lot in bloom??? Lights were on for the photo. The color is better than the photo as the light green tops aren't really that light green.

That plant looks great. Made me wanna go back and try NL again :)

Happy growing
Thanks Spaceship! It's sure the momma of the group as it's grown hands down faster than the other three. Going to clone all and keep in veg until these bloom. We'll see if a nice veg equates to a good yielder.

That's correct... I'm not sure on the numbers as I'm away from it but it's the Grow, Micro, Bloom line.
verify it.
I just want to verify before I give you the mix info

many times they have several different lines in the same brand

Hi im4satori,

Just got back to the forum today. I'll be checking tomorrow and will let you know what's listed on the jugs I have. Just flipped yesterday. The HPS bulb is crazy orange tint compared to the MH bulb. Everything is new to me... lol I took just over a dozen of clones from the fasted growing most vibrant plant in the group. I have them getting misted in a cloner bucket. They didn't look so great at first like they were about to wither up but two days later they are all perked up and appear to want to continue life. Another first for me. This is so much fun!

The thing I notice the most as far as difference between these girls and most of what I see on youtube is, the stems are so much thicker. The plants are short and stocky. The biggest is just shy of two feet but the stem is over an inch thick now. I can no longer lift it out of its bucket. One that's a bit smaller, I can still lift it but it's roots are less than a week from getting locked in their buckets too. Not sure what's going to happen in two more months. These are 5 gallon buckets. ???

DWC doesn't have the same rules as soil when it comes to root space

you can pack the roots pretty tight in hydro and not have an issue

I haven't ever grown in DWC but im assuming its the same deal

root growth slows a good bit during flowering

if its the same as what I have

the micro is
N 2%
Mg 0.1%
Ca 2.4%
Fe 0.06%

and the grow and bloom have none
