Hello, newbie here. Figured this would be a good place to document the first legit attempt and share with everyone. Feel free to chime in on anything, pretty green on all this other than research, prior gardening experience and one other attempt to grow a random seed with no prior planning. (Bunch of fluffy buds on a 6ft unruly monster in the basement)

Grow Room Setup

Room
  • Secret Jardin DR90 Grow tent (3x3)
Airflow and Filtering
  • Hyperfan 6" (315CFM)
  • Phresh 6"x12" Carbon Filter (450 CFM)
  • 2x Secret Jardin 6" Monkey Fan
Lighting
  • Timber 300w COB Grow Light Kit
    • 4x Cree CXB3590
    • Mean Well HLG-320H-C2100B
    • 3D printed + Aluminum L channel frame
Timing / Monitoring
  • 2x iDevices Switch (Timing and power monitoring via app)
  • Caliber IV Digital Thermo/Hygrometer - (still looking for a good wireless \ app enabled option)

Grow
  • 1x Nirvana Blackberry
  • Fox Farm Ocean Forest x Perlite x earthworm castings
  • 7Gal Smart Pot
Starting slow for the first grow with only 1 plant to learn the ropes. Plan to do a SCROG and learn about training and how this one grows. Based on how this one goes, will see if multiple plants would fit / be better in this space for the next time.

So far.....
  • Sep 13: Seed started in soil, placed in bright room
  • Sep 15: Sprouted and on its way
  • Sep 16: Moved to tent under lights 18/6
    • Lights 20" away dialed down to 100w draw at idevice plug
  • Sep 24: Seems happy in tent, second set of true leaves coming in, will pot up soon.
Now for some pics

Nice will be watching. I built a very similar DIY light myself for my 3x3 and one of my girls is flowering under it. Mine are 3000K though. I just got the same filter and fan too upgrading the old 4" amazon setup.

Nice and clean layout, should do well for you. :blsmoke:

Dang go all out? Or go all out? do coco or hydro!
Considered but that was one more variable to add to the mix. Way comfortable with soil, but next time we will see :)

Thanks! Just hoping to get enough to last until the next grow :) I have seen people put a lot more LEDs in a 3x3 so was kind of worried about not having enough light. We shall see!

The filter setup is way more than needed for the 3x3 so it lets you keep it quiet(ish). I have the fan a couple notches above the 35% mark and it sucks the sides of the tent in nicely. Cranked it up to full for testing and thought the tent was going to implode :P

Yeah I prefer over kill on the fan as well and then running it lower for less noise. I was concerned about the watts for the 3x3 too until I hung my light and put my big girl under it. Concern over with lol. I'll probably be hanging my new fan/filter tomorrow.

Another week has gone by and the girl is growing up.

Think it is on the 4th node now, or at least starting it. It's pretty thick with leaves along the stem so it's hard to get a good look. Will probably pot it up to the smart pot soon, turned the lights up tonight a little as well. I guess I will start training after moving to the final pot but still need to do some reading.
  • Oct 06: Turned lights up to 125w

  • Oct 07: Potted up to 7Gal Smartpot. Mix of Fox Farm Ocean Forest, Perlite and earthworm castings.
    • Turned COBs up to 125w
Roots were not coming out the bottom so didn't think they were so packed

  • Oct 09: Very happy! New soil and extra light has her standing up nicely. Not really sure where to go from here. Any advice on training? Trying to SCROG but have never done it before.

It is the best demonstration I have seen.. . and your plant is the perfect size to start training...
I did a similar sort of training to fit a rectangular closet when I first started growing..
some ppl call it defoliation.. I call it productive thinning.. whatever works for you!

I really, really like your setup! The iSwitches are a great idea too. Other than price, what made you go with the 4 COB 300W vs the 6 COB 300W? I was considering the 250W version for the same space or a 2X4, in SCROG and think that would do well also.

What is the heat like with that light?

The inter-nodal space on that plant is so tight, if it's not genetics that light must be really good even dimmed to 100W.

Thanks! I am happy with the whole package thus far, feeds all my nerdy customization type of needs and seems to be working pretty good.

I was honestly focused mostly on watts per square foot when I was picking my lights. I wanted a little more wattage but those options stepped up the price pretty quickly, the 300w x4 just hit my price/power ratio in the right place in the end. (i think it was actually cheaper when I purchased than it is now) Also when I initially drew out a 3x3 grid it seemed logical to have a light at each of the intersections around the center square. Not scientific at all looking back, and probably leaves some decent holes in the coverage. If I did it again I may have gone for a 5 or 6x just for expand-ability but I am happy with what I have now.

What is the heat like with that light? There is very little, when turned down. My tent sits about 3 degrees F hotter than the room at 100-150w and the heatsinks are pretty much cool to the touch. Full blast its a bit warmer but I do not have numbers yet. I do not expect it to raise temps more than 5 more degrees though if that, will update when I have them cranked up.

I am thinking genetics are playing the biggest factor but it seems very happy under the light. Color is good, it does not seem to be reaching towards any one specific cob or anything like that so I am very happy with performance thus far.

I will try to do an update later tonight. I had a great success training it (LST) followed by a big fail the next day, (snap!) so now it is topped at the second node. :wall: Still looking good today though so will keep on trucking!

If you squeeze the stem and smash it just a little they won't break as easily...
Also if it doesn't break clean off you can tape it back together with good success....

Thanks for the tip! It was like 50% and after consulting the actual green thumb around here, beheading commenced.

Did you print the brackets personally or is there a company that does this?
I have a 3d printer so I designed and printed everything myself. There are several services out there that can print items for you if you do not have access to a printer. https://www.3dhubs.com finds people local that will print things for you. Something like this is about a days worth of printing on the most common types of printers.

  • DAY 27 (From Seed)
    • Decided to try some LST and used some gardening velcro to bend the girl over.
    • Turned lights up to ~140w
blue27.JPG

blue272.JPG

  • DAY 28
    • She was looking great! all the leaves had turned over and the top was trying to turn up as well. Then my dumb ass has to fuck with the pot trying to get a good picture. I moved the pot material and it tugged the plant a tad too far. :wall: It cracked about half way through the stock right at the bend. I had to fess up to the real gardener of the house  and the decision to top was made.
    • Turned the head into a rooting experiment. Don't have pics of before, but this is after.

  • DAY 29
    • She looks to be recovering. Lesson learned...

Plastic is pretty cheap so I don't think it would be too much, definitely more than screws though. I'd have to weigh all the pieces, but should be less than $10 worth of plastic. If you are really interested I may be willing to print some out, just be a few days of printing and a disclaimer that I'm no engineer :bigjoint:.
