Newbie Wardrobe Grow

Hi guys, been lurking for a while now and finally decided to take the plunge and have a go myself!
I have cleared out my wardrobe and can now use the lower section to have a go at growing. :weed:
The space i have measures:
Height: 44"
Width: 34"
Depth: 19"


I am going to remove to 2 shelves obviously.
I want to build a growing box to put inside this space.
To start with i want to do it as cheap as possible, i can always add more expensive equipment later if needed.

At the moment i am in the planning stage, all i know for sure is that i am going to build the box out of wood, i think i will paint the inside with white paint.
Heat WILL be an issue so i don't know what lights to use yet, i also plan on having some sort of slider switch to control the fan speed to help control the temperature. Will drill holes in the bottom of the box for air intake.
Also plan on using a carbon filter but i don't know too much about this yet.

So basically my build will consist of:
A home-made box
Some sort of light
PC fan + slider
Carbon filter

I will be using soil growing method.

This will probably take me the next week or 2 to get it built and running.
Any advice and help would be great.

yeah i just set up my first grow spot in my closet,soil method also,i went to lowes and they have 150 watt hps light systems on sale at my store for 22.99(suppose to be 99.99) i got a couple of those and ill tell you what i have just thrown seeds in soil before,but under these lights my plant is growing like crazy,i feel like every time i check on it through the day she is shifting and moving,cool stuff.i have been using shultz plant food,i think it works ok,my plant is really healthy green and growing well,im new so thats bout as far as i am now.

Welcome to the wonders of growing!

Personally I would get a 4" cool tube, 250w hps light/ballast, 4" inline fan and a carbon filter.

Pop the Filter onto one end of the cool tube and fan on the other end to pull air through the filter and tube, then run ducting from the fan out of the closet.

I think you will have enough width in there but if you don't you have enough depth to run ducting from the filter to the cool tube and have them hang next to each other depthways? (I hope this make sense).

Then I would get a strain that I know I could keep low, mainly or all indica. I would have a look into Lowrider type strains also they would be great in there.

Hopefully someone will give you other tips, in particular, CFL growing, as this is best suited to small setups. Im afraid I don't use CFL's so I can't help you there.

I have set many a closet up with cool tubes tho and I reckon there is at least 2 onces a month to be had in yours.

I uploaded a pic of my plans for the grow box that i intend to build and put in the wardrobe.

Is it possible to have a bend in the "exhaust pipe" i mean the bit with the carbon filter on, i don't want to waste too much space.

I think i am decided on an HPS light, would 1 be enough for my space, and would 250w be enough?
I looked up the cool tube thing, as i understand it this sometimes comes with the light and is just a glass tube that sits over the bulb?

Ah i just re-read your post and i missed some of it!!
So there is a gap on the other end (power end) of the cool tube to suck air through?
I like what your suggesting alot because it means i won't have to have the carbon filter on the outside of the box which would reduce the size of the box :D

Anyone know a good UK sites that are safe to order from, or a good shop?
I don't seem to have any good supply shops near me :(

Also how do you make the doors air tight?

I didn't realise you were going to build a box to put inside. Can you not put doors on the closet you have and use that? *Tip* Ikea single wardrobes are cheap as chips and seem to be custom made for such activities ;-)

The cooltube is a hollow tube with a light fitting inside for your lamp. It is open ended each side so, say if you get a 4" cooltube, you then get a 4" filter which fits snuggley on on end and a 4" fan which fits on the other. Then get some 4 inch ducting to fit on the other side of your fan which will lead out of the closet expelling warm but filtered (no smell) air.

So the air in your closet is sucked through the filter, cooltube,fan,ducting and out (in that order). I tried to post a picture and failed, sorry:oops:
I suggested 250w but you could go up to 400w in that space.

If you wanted to go higher then I would suggest a 6" cooltube,fan and filter. And more importantly I would suggest running it slightly differently to deal with the added heat.

You would need to set it up as above but instead of having a filter on the one end, attach ducting which runs air in from outside of the box. This way the air that passes over the cooltube is from outside the box instead of inside and should be considerably cooler.
You would then need to get another fan and filter installed, at the top of the box, to deal with odour and pull in fresh air for your plants, (cooltube would now be a sealed unit.)

To be honest tho 400w will be great in that space. And one last thing in the bottom of the closet I would drill some holes to bring in fresh cool air.

I think it sounds a lot easier to stick with the 250w!
I will check out ikea now and see what they offer ;)
I have been looking at lots of sites, and i understand with the aid of your guide how the cool tube etc works now.

Still have a lot of things to work out,
where to buy from,
how to make the door air tight (do i need to?)
when i find somewhere to buy from i have to work out which models to buy,
then i have to decide what kind of soil to use,

then i think i am ready to get started :D

What are T5's like in comparison to hps/mh for flower?
I checked your journal out and I may have misread, but aren't you going to use hps yourself for flowering?

I haven't really seen much about t5's on here so if you could let me know I might invest in some. I've always got a few spare bucks for another Ikea wardrobe ;-)

As I'm in the UK also, its 3am for me too, and I'm gonna have rugrats tugging on my ear to take them to school in 4 hours :shock:

As soon as I finish the school run I'll check it out for you or ask one of the staff to have a look. Thats if noone sorts it out in the meantime.

I just checked out ikea, they are kindof expensive. I figure i can build a unit for less than £60, and it will fit my space perfectly.
In the wardrobe there is a 5mm gap at the bottom on the left side which goes into the chimney which will bring cool ait into the wardrobe which will go into my box through the drill holes at the bottom to keep it cool ;)

T5s ARE MINI FLUROS REALLY. THERE SMALL LONG ROUND BULBS THAT ARE REALLY AWESOME WHEN USED FOR VEGGING AND CLONING.AND YE I WILL BE USING HPS BUT I HAVE A REALLY BIG ROOM.LOOK UP THE T5s THERE ARE A COUPLE JOURNALS ON HERE THAT WERE DONE ALL THE WAY WITH THEM AND THEY GOT A REALLY GOOD AMOUNT. THE REASON I SUGGESTED HE USE THEM IS THERE MORE EFFICENT AND COST LESS TO OPERATE AND YOU HAVE NO HEAT PROBLEMS AND YOU CAN PUT THEM AS CLOSE AS 4 INCHES OVER YOUR CANOPY FOR A SMALL SPACE THEY CANT BE BEAT
