NZ 2014/15 Outdoor Questions & Your Journals :)

Hey guys & girls from New Zealand!!

Thought may as well start a new NZ Thread so all us NZ'ers can fill each other in on each others grow tips, journals, etc!

I'm new here but done a couple indoor/outdoor grows previously & wondering a few things before the season starts here in Upper North Island 37S.
1) When are you planning on putting yours out?
2) What's the minimum daily temperature and sunshine hours you personally require to put your babies out?
3) How much on average would you expect yield most years? (I know a lot of factors)
4) How bigger holes do you dig to plant your babies? (dimensions)
5) What growing mediums do you use? (50% natural ground, zoodoo, worm castings, sheep manure, etc)
6) What growing tips could you advise to increase yields? (tipping techniques, security, pest prevention, etc)

Anything else people want to know from NZ, post here but there's my questions as starters if anyone can help me :)

Hey webz sweet I was wondering who would get a 14/15 thread going. I might as well start of.
Im aiming to put mine out mid to late October. Ive actually already got a plant going but its sort of just an experiment.
I cant really answer your second question myself but my guess is it would be 13 or 14 hours? Id say if your going out from seed youl be okay but if its from clone then youd wanna watch yourself.
I dug mine probably 1.5 - 2ft deep and 2ft + wide, Idk if its big enough but well see, Id say it should be fine.
I used soil from home that was really good mixed with compost, sheep manure, dolomite lime, potash and im adding water crystals and probably bat gunao just to finish it of. The last few holes i got lazy and just used everything minus the compost and soil from home and used river soil from near by so well see how that goes. Infact I just finshed preping my plots today :)
As for yield increasing tips well I have no idea to be honest im not that experienced however I did read this article called how to bend your way to a 1lb monster.
http://www.420magazine.com/forums/vegetative-cycle/190958-how-bend-top-your-way-1-pound-monster.html

What strains are you doing this year? Cheers

Hi Weebz, good to see another kiwi on here.
I'm also at 37 lat.
I've got some seedlings in a pot now in the garden to condition them to the colder nights at the moment and toughen them up.
Depending on how fast they grow(only just growing their first set of true leaves now) plan on putting them out end of October so they establish a good root system before the really hot months.
For seedlings the temperature and light hours aren't as crucial as clones, ideally for clones I'd wait till mid November if the weather is good - minimum temps for clones (for me) are 20 degrees on average and nothing below 10 at night. put clones out at the right time and they'll surpass early planted seeds. The general growing season at 37S or below is from end of september - end of May(June-July in glasshouses), this year it ended late may and I harvested on the 20th before it went cold and shitty.
for guerilla growing I don't worry too much about depth, 2x2 ft like letstrip said is good enough. I've dug lesser holes before and they still go good. I change my mediums each year but this season I'll probably just stick with a standard compost mix with probably mexican bat guano, water crystals and neem granules to condition the soil and to keep pests away(mealy bugs, vine hoppers etc.)
The use of neem is essential if you live in areas with lots of orchards/nurseries otherwise you could easily end up with a very bad vine hopper infestation like what happened to me this year. normal sprays wont work because they are resistant from them, vine hoppers can reduce the yields by up to 31%.

Too many variables with the yield thing but to get the most out your plant you need the most sunshine hours possible, all day sun will grow monsters at this latitude especially. Tipping them encourages more girth(you probably already know) and gets more sturdy which is definitely needed for this climate, nothing worse than coming back to half broken out of control plants.

All the best for your grow mate.

Spring is in the air!!!

This will be my second season, learnt alot from last year.
This year im putting out clones at the end of this month and seedlings/clones at the end of november.
I think 14 hours(end of November) of light is a pretty safe amount to keep transplanted plants thriving in the vegetative state, avoiding stunted growth from early flowering or cold nights of 12-14 hours. My plants that suffered these factors last year never yielded much. I dig my holes about the same as you all but this year Im also hoping to try out some fabric pots i made out of our ripped trampoline fabric for a laugh.
I ammended the holes with gypsum, lime and blood meal. And added a bag of cheap compost to each hole. Im hoping to average at least 4-6Oz per plant this year, with minimal maintenance at the grow spots. Ill be using water crystals when I plant out too.
I think one of the biggest things I learnt last year was that this plant really likes the sun, especially the morning sun. A plant that receives direct MORNING sunlight will be less likely to be attacked by pests and mold - Tip ot the day

Would love a cut of whatever you got going on crazykiwi... wink wink ;)

I vegged a couple of seedlings for a month or so and then put them out(guerilla styles baby!!!) in mid-August to try for a spring harvest and sex the plants for clones in the regular season. I only took clones from the females I liked the look of most.

Clones - check

This is the only pheno that looks like it could finish enough to smoke.
Shes lookin frosty but not much weight yet. I know it will reveg if I leave it but Im hoping it flowers enough for some summer smoke :bigjoint: What do you guys think? How long till it starts to reveg? Daylight hours are around 13 hours atm...

Different plant, same pheno but a bout a week behind, this is what the other plant looked like last week.

No idea what the genetics are but it smells sweet and fruity. Any of you guys know

Nice man I put one out in the middle of winter and its flowering now. Dunno how long until yours will reveg. Mines in my backyard so Ive built a cover to put over it each night so it doesn't reveg.
Love the pink hairs i wonder what strain it is. Is that the one you grew last season outdoors, that pink one? How longs yours been flowering?

Ill chuck some pics up of mine latter, I think mines a bit behind yours.

Yeah its that same pink indy strain from last season. I put the plants out around 8weeks ago and at a guess id say their at 4-5week mark needing another 3-4weeks but by then daylight would be more than 14hrs.

I've got 3 seedlings at the moment. Middle Earth Sativa. Planning on getting them outside at the start of November. I've had them under 12/12 for the last 13 days, hoping to know their sex and to start re-veging before November. Keeping them in the closet under 4 23w CFLs and putting them out in the sun when able to at the moment.

Here is a description from the vendor of Middle Earth Sativa:
Sativa
Very nice new zealand outdoor strain (unknown genetics originally came from Kawerau), very large yields, large leaves, well climatized to nz conditions - floral, spicey, skunk and bubblegum flavours.

Yields Between 5oz - 16oz (maybe more if the right conditions)

Ships locally as well ;)

Not quite sure what I'm going to put in my holes (jeez that sounds weird now that I've typed that).

Looking good Snapper. Im not sure how youll get on trying to sex those seedlings at such a young age and then back into veg by november. These transitions usually take a couple of weeks , each way(maybe more for a sativa domina strain), and this will limit your plants growth to more of 5oz yield than a 16oz.

The pink indy smoke was fine, nothing to go crazy about but I liked the earlier finish, pink pistils and chunkier buds. It had more mold issues which is a negative though.

I think if I can get a couple of decent spots established this season Ill look at getting some good genetics for next.
Buying beans seems like a big investment for plants I dont have full control of. I lost quite a few plants last year (first season), but they were free seeds... gutted... but no biggie... perfect.

I have been lurking around the forums making up my little wishlist.
Whats on your genetics wishlist?

Thanks! Do you think if some pistils showed this week I would be able to get them partially re-veging by November? I've run a Kandy Kush plant that looked sativa leaning straight on 12/12 once and it showed some pistils on day 27 so I think I've got a decent chance of knowing this week. They were under 18/6 for a bit more than a week before flipping to 12/12 as well.

Something that is really indica leaning is on my genetics wishlist. Want something pungent and stoney with tightttt buds to grow inside next year.

I hope that plant gets to finish! I think most indicas will stay in veg around 13.5 hrs daylight and sativas closer to 14 so I'd think it will.

Just wondering where you got those seeds from? Can the vendors post locally?

Cloud9 Marketplace from a vendor called Middle Earth Seeds. Will be posted from inside New Zealand. If you're interested you'll want to look into Tor and bitcoin. This could be a good place to start. I'm not sure if it's against forum rules to post links to the type of websites that offer such products so I won't but if anyone wants it PM me and if it isn't against the rules let me know and I'll link in this thread (although you should be able to find the link for yourself with what I have posted).

Shot! Yeah it looks around 2-3 weeks of flowering it should be done in time for xmas/new years.
Dont think Id be keen to cover and uncover everyday, same time everyday, but you do what you gotta do to get where you need to go...
I wouldnt do that but I would of course carry 40L bags of compost round the bush to secret gardens... haha :bigjoint:
Why do they make it so hard?

Let the good times roll!!!

Yea I reckon 2 - 3 weeks in shes pumping out the hairs now and getting some decent bud formation going on and just starting to show a little resin. Yeah man its a pain to have to put it on at 6:30 every night then take it of when its dark but its algood coz its in my back yard so it doesn't take much effort haha I put to much effort into it to let her reveg. Oh tell me about it, its pretty hard work though ha  Dirt never goes far damnit, it looks like lots until you fill the hole and you wonder why only half the hole is filled lol

Bring it on :)

Got a few more things sorted for the girls today.
Most of my plants never made it past seedling stage last year because I didnt use any protection against slugs and possums. That changes this year. Scored some scrap/offcuts of chicken wire from a local community garden :bigjoint:
Free stuff is the best!!! Cut them into nice little rectangles for cylindrical cages, rolled them all up together ready for transport.

Ever have that situation while watering, when you pour a bunch of water at the base of the plant and most of it runs right across the soil, to everywhere BUT the roots? lol
Bought a 10L bag of vermiculite to help get some air in the native/compost mix at as many spots as 10L will go.
Maybe a litre each for 10 holes? Thoughts?

Also got some neem granules to help prevent as many bug issues as I can, as we see alot of passion vine hoppers in this area, and lastly some worm castings to help the girls settle into their new homes.

Slowly getting everything ready and Im feeling much better about my prep this season than last.

You sound sorted this year mattskiBOP. Is it a long trek to your spot? Its good having transport ha. With the vermiculite I guess it depends on how big your holes are.
Heres some pictures of the girls from yesterday getting ready to go out sometime.

Left bottom and top are Panama - Notice the first true set of leaves on the front left panama, weird ha. It has 2 leaves on its first se and the back one has 3. IMG_3974.JPG
The middle front is Taskenti and the middle back is Cotton candy just came through tonight.
The back right is LSD
And the front right is Panama DC
