I never top feed with DWC. What I do is let my rooted clone's roots get about 6-8" long, before I put them in the netpots. When I put them in the netpots, I hold the clones in the empty netpot to where some of the roots are laying at the bottom. Then I gently add Hydroton until the netpots are full, and hold up the rooted clones. I don't use RRs anymore. I root clones with neoprene pucks, then add them to the netpots explained above.

So, what I got going on now is, I'm popping from seed in RR, after about a week. I move into solo cup into hydroton, I'll leave in that cup about 2 weeks then transfer to dwc

Hes started from seed

I do the same with clones they stay in the cloner till roots are big enough to drop in

I cut a 3/4x3/4 in the center of my pot then i fold the clones leaves in a roll and slip it in from the bottom.

I use growstones which float
So i take the clone in the cup and fill it in a bucket of water since they float they will orintate them selves perfectly in the cups center. Without hurting any roots.

But from seed i go from RR or rockwool and drop into the net when the taps starts getting long but before it dries out .

In cups as so. I only put in cups right now due to space limitations. I can control their feed on a great schedule.
It looks like they're stretching a bit. Also, I don't know if keeping the stock wrapped is the best approach. Little ones build up a strong stock from small breezes blowing on the plant. And with hydro, you really want a strong stock, because they aren't nearly as strong as plants grown in soil. You want to give the plants some exercise, to help build up the stock. Plants do better when fans aren't pointed directly at them. Of course, sometimes this is unavoidable, and you have to work with what you've got. But too much strong, constant wind can give your leaves wind burn. It's better to breeze them from the turbulence of the wind. Pointing two fans towards the center, under the hood, is a good method, but the best method is to create a vortex around your plants, using two or more fans.

I think that's what I'll end up doing with that small veg tent thing I got going on. Two small 6 inch clip one pointed at each other. I do need to build up their strength. I moved one support completely from the shorter one. What do you recommend I do to suport/strengthen them. The shorter one is good from me messing with it everyday. It's standing alone.

If they're able to stand on their own, then I wouldn't support them. It should encourage growth and strengthening of the stock. If they need to be supported, you can use anything from chop sticks, to small bamboo shoots. Then just loosely twisty-tie the stock to it, u til it stands on it's own.

What is the downside to using straws? I replace the straw every day

Straws are fine, but I wouldn't have the stock inside the straws. Like I said, it might prevent them from wiggling and building up much-needed strength.

I see! Now that I look. The stem isn't jiggling to the wind at all..

See if they'll stand on their own. Instead of tying the stock to the straw, try just leaning it against the straw. That'll still allow the stock to wiggle.

Also, you may not necessarily see the wiggling, because it's really small. But if your leaves are moving, even a little, then the stock is wiggling. So, watch you leaves.

Got a project for you, that should help.

  1. Get a couple more solo cups, and cut them in half (razor works)
  2. Place the top (open) parts of the cut cups on top of your Hydroton, in your existing cups
  3. Fill up the new space with Hydroton
Now your plants will hold up. You might need much less than half a cup, to hold them up. Leave an inch or so, of the stock exposed.
