I finished my first 2x4 LED build and I'm happy with everything so far. The build mostly went to plan, it included a few ideas I wanted to test out for future so its a bit over-engineered but the basics are

8x CXB3070
8x Arctic Alpine 11 Plus
1x HLG 320 c1050b
PWM fan speed control
8x thermal cutout
2x Temp displays

FRAME - 25mm aluminium I used rivets wherever possible, so much easier than screws, the heatsinks were tapped for four screws each.

COB temp - I attached a probe to the thermal measurement point of just one COB as a sample to monitor the COB temps. So far the COB is running nice and cool, approx. ten degrees C above ambient temp.

THERMAL CUTOUTS - wired in series with the LED power and mounted on the heatsinks just in case there's a fan failure, hopefully these never get put to the test.

PWM controller - this uses a standard module with the PWM signal distributed to the fans. The only snag was that I'd used a 12v-5v buck converter to power the module for testing and then it didn't work with more than 6 fans connected. I'm guessing this was due to voltage drop as once I swapped the converter for a 6v version the PWM signal was fine. The controller is just to save the fans from always running at full speed, it seems from tests they stay plenty cool enough at half speed. I fitted a timer relay so that the fans start at full speed for ten seconds at power on.

HEAT EXCHANGER 80L / 300W led lamp / 18h = 90L of hot(37°C) water.
- The electricity bill for my led lamp is payed by my savings in hot water.

To run the led lamp(300W) without heat exchanger - you need a 40L water bucket and maybe a little room fontain to have ideal conditions in the grow room. air: 28°C water: 33°C RH: ~70%

next target will be a watercooled led lens - hunting the remaining 15-20% heat power, wich is still emitted by LES and the upper side of the chip.

You can chose cree, citis, veros and eg. mean well as driver to mount a coolmac-system,
if you pay the difference.

The image of chinise or taiwan chips is very bad. But have another look to:

So if you drive a middle class CBX3590(CB 11000) @ 51,9W / 1500mA / 147lm/W you have low current efficiency gain of 42% compared to max. current (3,6A) .

So 103,3lm/W @ 3,6A is nothing interesting for DIY

The same efficiency gain(more or less) you can expect from an epistar chip.

97,32lm/W @1750mA (max. current) becomes 138,2lm/W @ 721mA.

The difference in lumen/W is : 147-138,2 8,8lm (6,3%)

The difference in price is 1 Cree CBX3590 cost you ~ $ 45,- and 3 epistar 50W is ~ $ 6,-

How can you be sure you aren't being shafted by 2 dollar 50W cobs from aliexpress/ebay?


Either factory rejects, can't take the rated wattage for too long or just plain fake data.

Also the "50W measured flux map" is clearly a 5000K LED.

And a CXB3590 at 5000K goes up to the DD bin at 70 cri or DB at 80 cri.
Not a CB bin, that's cherry picking.

And according to a calculator the DD bin is 198.1 lm/w at 1.5A. (190 with a tj of 50c)
Which makes it 43% more efficient than the low driven epistars
184 at DB

The commonly used 3500K goes up to CD which would make it 170 lm/w.

And it's not like the Cree is still a good deal with the 19 dollar Luminus CXM22 which is just as efficient.
Or the more efficient CLU056 which is the same price as the 3590.

You realize in your comparison you are driving the CXB twice as hard and its still still more efficient... Think that 147lm/w would go up if you ran both at 700ma???

Plus everything @frica already mentioned you have heavily skewed the data in your favor. And even then it still is outperformed. When the data isnt skewed, or skewed in the other direction, the argument becomes rather silly.

A few pics of my first cob build. I still have some finishing to do but I've been running it just for testing temps and draw etc. The light is 24"x24"
and it is intended for a 3'x3' tent. The fans are not connected yet because I was an idiot that connected AC to the DC side of the power supply. It appears to not matter that much because at full blast after 3 hours, the hottest heatsink is just at 99 to 101 degrees. Looking forward to my first legal grow!

You are providing exactly zero counter arguments.

Also, should I ask the question you've been dodging again?

If an 1W UV-C led produces 200mw UV-C, are you going to argue it's 0% efficient because its luminous efficacy is exactly 0lm/w?


Anyway, the comparison you had made with the 5000/5700k Epistar COB was flawed because you were comparing it with a CB bin while min 70cri 5000/5700K CXB3590 COBs go up to the DD bin. (as per datasheet)
The 3590 DD with a junction temp of 50 degrees celcius is about 190 lm/w.
Which is massively more efficient than the Epistar COBs.

I know you're just trying to earn food on the table by selling your Coolmac system, but please try to provide some actual arguments.

LOL I used the data YOU PROVIDED. Way to ignore literally every point we made. For someone who apparently doesnt like Trump, you seem to use a lot of his same shady tactics.

Is this true? Are you a stakeholder in this CoolMac light? Or just a passionate enduser? Because if you are a stakeholder youve been using awfully misleading information in order to profit, which is pretty shitty if true.

Heres my first led experiment! amason and ebay is where i got the drivers and cobs.
3 100w full spectrum cobbs and 2 bright 100 w cobbs and 5 10 watt cobbs.
