planting the corn

been a couple years since i've been able to have a cornfield, but i have a nice big one this year. about 500 sq ft. i tilled and terraced it all by hand, as it sits on a severely sloped, south facing hillside.

i'll take some before and after pics today to share, and then keep the updates going as the season goes on.

i used to be particular about corn varietals, but i've come to realize that all sweet corn is basically good shit. so i only have three basic varieties, an early, middle, and late.

pics to follow once i get up off my ass.

camera decided not to upload, so used my phone to grab some pics.

how it looks to start:

after pulling the weeds:

i have the sprinkler wetting it all down right now. then i'll give it a final raking and plant the damn things.
You will have more corn but mine is bigger.......So who really has the most corn?

me.

6 rows, 32 stalks in each row, should be enough space for two ears a stalk.

they'll be 9 feet tall by the end of season too.
What do you use for nutrients, do you use bloom? The reason I ask is I use my MMJ plant nutrients and will soon start using bloom, can I give that to the corn as well?

one final raking of the rows before planting:

and a nice thorough soaking of the soil after planting:

now we wait. i'll update in a week or two once they all start popping up.

i also planted the same varietals in dixie cups in my greenhouse, about 50 of each. they have already sprouted. i take them out there and fill in any gaps in the rows after everything comes up (or doesn't come up).

Nice looking spot, will be following along, hope you're crackin lots of corn later this year.
thanks man!

the yard/garden has come a long way since we bought this place last autumn. it was all just weeds, trash, rocks, debris, you name it. i've done a lot of work to get it to bare minimum readiness for a garden this year.

this is the only picture i have of the cornfield area before it got turned over, tilled, and terraced.

i'll go snap some pics today of what it all looks like now with some of the shit i built over the winter (those raised beds were not ther when i moved in either).

gonna plant the herb garden today, as well as some more rows of carrots, lettuce, and beets.

Looks good man, I think you're going to have a great garden. I started doing the same thing last year, before we moved in I don't think the backyard had even been mowed for years. Lots of work, it will get you in shape if you aren't! Your raised beds look interesting.

thanks, they were almost 100% free. i only bought the nails i used to hammer them together.

the 4x4 posts and 2x4 rails were all free from craigslist, i recycled old fences. the pickets are recycled shipping pallets, also free from CL. the soil is from a local organic dispensary, they have a 15 foot high mound of dirt that is about 200' by 200'.

here is how it looks now.

also built those stairs for nearly free, just needed some rebar and lag bolts. still looking for more lumber to finsh them off.

Very nice! You did some thorough prep work and it will make all the difference.
My back hurts just looking at it. What will you use for mulch/soil retention? Straw? Salt hay? I'll be down for harvest...sweet corn is friggin wonderful.

spirit airlines will fly you from PHX to DIA for about $35 each direction.

i was not gonna mulch the field, just gonna keep it watered, maybe let the weeds grow in a bit once the corn is tall enough.

doing all the work by hand got me in great shape.

i'll let you know when everything is hitting its peak.

you may miss out on the improved edible pod super sugar snap pole peas, but we'll make do with yukon gold potatoes and silver queen corn.

what's funny is that it just dawned on me last night that i can eat everything i am growing.

i did this mainly because i like growing stuff, secondly because i like building stuff, and third to get some sweat equity out of the house.
