those dam flys i had em one year... destroyed the whole crop... they lay the larvy in ur root balls the larve eat and feed off the roots and cause sickness and death... we had to soak each plant in water with heavy pestisides... then flush really good for a week to clean em out... the only real way to get rid of em is to throw all ur soil away every bag and bleach every thing... sad i know but outhere wise they will come back... good luck any more advice just ask..

Dude, top dress the soil with sand. The flys can't get in to lay eggs, then put up some fly strips to catch the parent fly.
The bleaching sounds like the light was to close.

Yep, use sand. I had a really bad problem with those little bastards, after i used some MiracleGro soil that had been stored outside in the weather for a few months. After I used the sand, it kept them under control really well, although didn't get rid of them completely. I've learned to live with them, because I don't want to start over again. They haven't been causing any problems since then, so I'm okay with that.

Those fly strips are a good idea too. Anything helps, and I use them along with the sand.

You just have to sprinkle a light layer of sand on top of the soil, and then the flys don't like to lay eggs because it's too dry. I've also read that the tiny sharp edges on the sand grains cut the larvae, and kill them, further helping the problem. I bought playbox sand at Walmart, and it worked great. It was purple, so now all my plants have a pretty purple color on the top of the soil.
