Purple stem genetics?

First grow. Soil mix of a few organic soils and perlite.

This is day 12. No nutes yet.

The non-purple one is Double Glock from Ripper. The purple stemmed one is a Special Kush #1 from Royal Queen. Both in the same soil mix. Both popped at the same time and to date needed the same amount of water. Under the same environment conditions (light temps and humidity).

Fairly reasonable to think the purple is just genetics?

Are they under blurple lights. Because just about every plant I've put under mine. Has ended up with oddly colored branches where exposed to the light.

Here are a couple more pictures of the Special Kush about 12 hours later.

Both leaves are turning down and twisting a bit. I cut the cup back because it's about 1/2 - 3/4 " lower in the solo cup than the Double Glock.

Color of the leaves are darker green than the Double Glock, and like you can see purple stem and vein on the leaf.

Still not sure if this is genetics, or if I'm going to see some nasty happen to the Special Kush.20170731_214633.jpg 20170731_214645.jpg 20170731_214649.jpg

My 1st guess is your soil mix. A few organic soils? We need exact details about what type of soil you created.

Didn't have much to choose from where I live.

Promix potting soil
Fafard gardening blend (earth, composted manure and lime)
Vermiculite

~1:2 ratio and then added 25-30% vermiculite.

Watering with PHed tap water (30-40 PPM) no nutes.

Temps are 68-70
Humidity 48-60

I can't help as I'm not familiar with the mix you made but that information is going to help if someone is familiar with those soils.

It's still a baby that hasn't dropped her original two leaves...don't do anything at this point...keep it simple and don't over water...g/l
I figured as much. That's why I titled the thread "genetics?" as I'm assuming this is all happening from there.

It was sitting pretty low in the pot, so like I said, I cut the pot down a bit to expose it, and the top of the soil to a little more air circulation... well wouldn't you know it... I cracked the cup in 2 places, at almost opposite sides!!

Damn cup was practically falling into 2. I decided to transplant it because if I even tried to water it in that cup, it would probably split apart. She is in an smart pot now.

Anyway, it's now 24h later and she doesn't look any worse for wear.

While I had it upside down swapping the cup for a pot, I did a little inspection and the soil looks good(no visible pests), also the soil wasn't waterlogged and holy shitballz the roots! That thing had roots everywhere! They weren't enough to hold the cup shape, but they were pretty much throughout the entire cup of soil. I had to be really careful when placing it into the new pot(soil wanted to fall off and I was afraid the roots would get stretched). I basically held the plant like my hands were a solo cup and twisted the pot with my feet so my knuckles acted like a auger. Seems like I didn't stress her out, and at least I got a good look at her roots etc.

Anyway, one less thing to do next week(or so). I just have to be careful about overwatering in the new pot till she fills it out.

My other girl hasn't really done much topside, but I do see her roots peaking out of the drainage holes so I know she's working up her root ball.

Thanks for the info guys, time to sit back and watch her grow...

Yeah! I originally suggested the soil. I have seen plants with red and purple before but the second picture of the seedling in the 1st post, the red in the stem, I am not used to seeing that on seedlings, at such an early age. Is it genetic?

Fafard looks like miracle grow under a different name. One of them is time release for several months, Probably a big mistake if you are using that one.

The ingredients dont list fertilizers as separate like most of the other stuff available.

My area kinda sucks. Out of all the different soils at our nursery 99% of them were available at big box and had time release based on a quick google. This was the only one that didnt.

Based on wikipedia Sun gro horticulture owns fafard. They also own Scotts.

It isn't like Scotts owns Fafard.

Anyway. I am sure if you look up the food chain most companies are owned by parents that are connected to bad related products.

The Fafard I used was one of the black earth blends. Black earth composted manure and lime. It had a .2 0 .1 npk.

I mixed with promix and vermiculite. Promix had a balanced npk. If I recall it was .2 .2 .2

Anyway, the girls are alive with tons of root, good color(besides the purple stem on one) and drinking water.

I wouldn't fret at this point, don't over water, not too much light and let them do their thing. I have seen purple stems no matter what cabinet/tent and environment I pop them. Imo it's mostly genetics. While the environment can potentially play a part I've seen them show purple stems and leaf veins from 68F to 80F, 50%RH to 70%RH environments and anything in between.

Interestingly enough, now my Double Glock is starting to look a little worse for wear...

First real leaves have a few brown spots on them and all the leaves are super droopy. Looks like overwatering, but she was light as a bone today, and the top inch was turning super light and dusty... Last watering was 3 days ago, and she really feels like she needs another one.

I cut a few extra drainage holes because maybe the top is dry, but the very bottom isn't. Cut 3 big drainage holes and saw quite a few roots in all the holes I cut.

On a side note, look at that Special K! Bounced back from ??? (soil issue maybe) Leaves are straight out, and she's reachin for the light!

20170804_222801.jpg The new veg may be a bit young to show it, but I don't see any purple on it... I wonder if I got some issues with my soil...

Oh one other thing that has changed is the outside temps, which means my AC hasn't been kicking in as much. This raised the temp from 70 -> 72, and the RH from 50% -> 56%.

I would thing that would be a good thing...

They look slightly over watered, as long as the new growth is healthy i would leave it be, do the solo cups have a drain hole in them? and if so how often are you watering? im thinking those need maybe a shot glass of water every couple days or maybe 3. Raise your temps if you can they will do better if they are in the upper 70s to low 80s.

I inspected the root ball of my Double glock and it had mad roots curling around the base of the cup.

Most people say about 3 weeks to transplant from solo cup (healthy plants will reach the edges by then), but since it looked poopy, and 3-4 of the roots made almost a complete circle around the base I decided to transplant to a larger pot. The special k seemed to really liked it, as it was droopy a bit, and it perked right up within 24 hours of transplanting.

This is day 14. I'll check on it tomorrow and see if it opened up a bit.

If so, could very well be overwatering, and I'll cut back.

They are both in 2 gallon smart pots now. I watered to try and get any major air pockets out of the soil, but I should be good for at least 5 days now.

With respect to temps, I'm really at the mercy of the outside temps. Wife doesn't like the house too hot and if it gets rippin hot outside, AC kicks in. My girls are in the basement so the ambient temp is in the 60's when the AC is on...

I only got a month left of possible AC weather. I'll have the temps between 70-75 for the remainder of the grow. Towards flower time my RH will most likely drop into the 30% range... but I got a humidifier on standby to make sure it isn't too dry. I know flower time it's best to be dryer, but not 20-30%... which is usually would happens around Dec.
