I was wanting to try a vertical grow. Do 3 inch net pots slide in 3 inch pipe or 3 inch couplings? sorry for a really simple Q but I really don't wanna take my net pot to home-depot.

I'd assume so . 3"vhole saw cuts a perfect hole for them to slide in to.

As stated 3" is the inside diameter so you'd be hard pressed (hahaha) to drill a hole, your saw would start tearing the wall apart. You'd be better off using 4", or 3.5" if u can get it, and have a bit of clearance I would think. also I would not drill the coupling as you'd be going through the pipe as well.

I think you might want to use pieces called "3" pvc wye" if you're building a tower. There are two kinds of wye, one is flared because it has couplings molded in. The other doesn't, and is standard pipe size at the three junctions. If you build it out of the non flared wyes you'll need caps and couplings, and it will go together just like Legos. I don't know what your plans are for drainage but you might be able to get away with only gluing one cap onto the bottom of the tower which would make it a snap to take down and clean.
