Question About Transplanting Technique I Used

So instead of popping out a root ball or transplanting to a bigger pot I took my 5 gallon pot, cut the bottom off with a razor knife, and inserted it in to another 5 gallon pot filled with about 3 gallons of soil. I feel like this is the easiest way and gives the roots room to expand downward. There was some sign that the roots were getting very crowded when I cut the bottom of the pot off. I did not loosen, move the roots, or "prepare" them to penetrate the new soil. I really didn't know if I would mess something up and they were kind of tight down there.

Soooo, will they take to the new soil on their own after a few days? I hope it wasn't crucial that I loosen the roots and force feed them into the new soil and that they put their roots down on their own.

Thanks.

Seems like a bit of a hassle to cut the bottom off.
I would have replanted..

The roots should be ok.

it'll be a bit difficult to water it if your soil is compact..The water will just stay at the top of the pot and not move down to the newly rooted soil.

When you say replanting are you talking about removing the entire soil mass and dropping it into a much bigger pot full of soil? One problem was that I'm outdoor and would have to get that huge pot and soil to the site and the other is that I didn't want to disturb a healthy, nearly 5 foot plant at my experience level- figured I might screw it up. But yeah, I think it might be better to do it that way overall.

It's actually very simple to cut around with a razor knife. This is what I did-

Soil is light and airy since it's Happy Frog so hopefully won't compact. I'll keep an eye on drainage though when I water to make sure it's draining.

Thanks.

Yeah, removing all the soil and everything and planting it in a bigger pot.

With more soil added of course.

Well just grow grow grow.
Any mistakes made in this grow, you'll learn from. :)
