Ready to Make the Switch, $1200 Budget

Hello everyone,

I am using a 4'x8'x7'-tall grow tent. I am currently running 3-600w air-cooled HPS lights.

I tend to lean toward higher yielding strains. I grow in soil, usually SOG in 5 gal pots.

I am a novice grower at best.

The heat here during the summer caused a lot of complications for my grows during the summer last year, and the current heat wave proved that this year could be the same. I do not have the electrical capacity to add an air conditioner.

I would like to make the switch to LED to cut down on heat. I have between $1000-1200 to invest in a new lighting set up. I would prefer pre-built units as I really don't know what I am doing from a DIY standpoint. My lights currently run off a 240v panel and I would like to continue using that panel for the LEDs.

My goal is to pull 3 lbs from the tent if possible. I would prefer a unit that is capable of veg and flower.

My research has pushed me toward Viparspectra. Multiple grow journals have shown success using this brand. They also have a 3-year warranty that I haven't found with other brands.I could replace my 3-600w HPS with 3 900w or 1200w Viparspectral panels and stay within budget.

Before I made the purchase, I wanted to come and ask for some advice. Like I said, I am not very experienced in this area. Any advice you all could offer would be greatly appreciated.

For the record, I did view the large thread about being new to LED. There is a lot of conflicting opinions and some of the information is outdated at this point. I created a separate thread to ask about my specific situation.

Thank you all in advance.

Thank you very much for the replies. I've taken a bit of time to do some reading about COBs, but I have a lot more to go. I am a bit intimidated by a DIY, but the more I read, the more COBs seem like a better product.

@CobKits, What is involved? I am interested, but I am not very "handy". Could you explain some more.

If plant numbers are no problem for you, I would stack that 4x8 with lolipops so tight their eyeballs pop.
As in single cola SOG? What size pots? I once filled the tent with 2 gal pots growing single cola SOG. It was the lowest yield of my 6 grows. I do want to try it again though. I thought I made a mistake with the pot size of something.

You could fit 4 x 1 Gallon square pots per square foot. You could fit 128 clones in that space. It'd be a bitch to water though lol

I'd stay away from viparspectra, they don't use the best quality LEDs and are most likely a step down from your current setup. You might want to look into DIY or prebuilt models, good luck.

It was a bitch to water when they were in 2 gal pots. I can only imagine in 1 gal pots. I did put them in at 12" which I guess is a bit tall for that type of grow.

Thank you for the advice on the LEDs. It looks like I will have to go DIY. I just need to figure the kit thing out.

I'd stay away from all the eBay and amazon sellers, for lower price, they do not care quality, safety.....
Thank you for the advice. I won't be ordering from either of those places. I really don't know all of what I am getting into yet and ordering from one of those places would compound the problem. There are so many acronyms and specs my head is spinning. I will be contacting CobKits tomorrow to discuss my options.

If heat is your biggest concern and your Jones'n for led why not look at some of the Quantum Board kits the drop right into your existing air cooled hoods? Contact Big Johnson @Stephenj37826 and @robincnn for info on them - there is also a post with pics somewhere around here
