Regular seeds or fem?

There's nothing wrong with throwing some pollen around to see what happens. As long as people throw at least a few females in with their male counter parts to preserve the original strain and properly store the seeds we wouldn't have to worry about all of these true breeding strains going the way of the Dodo like so many have.

As long people don't just keep relying on the one or two plants from first or second generation crosses homogenization shouldn't been an issue. Unfortunately that is the trend just like you were saying. Way too much selfing and backcrossing. The best thing prospective new breeders could do is to actually use a proper selective breeding process to bring some consistency and stability to new lines but also preserve the original strains like you're talking about.

As long as enough people do these things in their breeding processes we can advance the discovery of new combinations of genetics without losing anything.
I totally agree bro.
This plant is sacred. We need to keep it that way, and not bastardise the poor things.
Marijuana is becoming waaaay too Monstanto, like all other types of plants and seeds.
IMHO, the "feminised only" breeders and sellers on the market, are some of the scummiest, greediest bits of shit there are. You can get 1000's of seeds from one plant.
They couldnt give two shits about their plants. They just wanna take our money and trap us into having to buy more. Just like Monsanto vegetables.
Let alone the cost of them at over $10 each. If someone tried to sell me seed on the street for 5-10 each, id tell them to take a hike. They could tell me the plants were worshipped and caressed by a sherpa, and grown in the Himalayas, and fed goat shit, id still em to get the fuck out.

If its good seed stock, its all the same shit. Its all good.

"Intellectual property"

Chuck some pollen on a girl, give the "new strain" a name and then feminize the seeds to protect their "intellectual property."

If these pollen chuckers actually did the proper breeding on these new strains and stabilized them i would be willing to pay big bucks for the seeds. But for big bucks they better grow and develop as advertised. However, from the 30+ plants from fem seeds i have grown out and finished only 2 of them made it through the whole cycle strongly. Only two. And even they yielded less than what they shouldve. Im convinced the feminization process, which is a stressor, weakens the genetics of the strain.

Right now im doing 8 Nirvana Northernlight fems. So far i am impressed by their uniformity. It is a stable strain. 10/10 seeds popped. Kept the best 8. 7 are the same pheno with one runt and the 8th is showing its sativa side. Well done Nirvana. This is how it should be.

BUT... they are not as vigorous and resiliant as the northern lights regs that i have done from Nirvana. Not even close. These have had troubled lives all the way through veg. Very senisitve... and they will yield far less than i am used to from regs of this strain because of it.

The trouble is... most.people.dont know any better because all they grow is fems, out of convenience...

Well said bro. Thanks for sharing your experiences aswell

I stay in contact with a breeder. We became email friends. He gifted me some shantibaba critical mass seeds that shanti feminized from his own garden and traded with him.

Phenomenal old school smoke. And the good feeling that the plant I grew came from the man himself.
Fuck yeah.
I looove great white shark :hump:
Its just so sweet and widowy at the same time. Could smoke it everyday

I like the shark for sure. But I wish my guy had asked for white rhino (medicine man). But my breeder likes sativa leaning hybrids like diesel, Thai and real skunk weed.

I had some great white shark from a dispensary 4 years ago. One of the only good weeds I ever got from a dispensary. I can still remember that delicious flavor. And a blasting high despite relatively low thc.

Here are some Fem seeds from a reputable breeder, there are many out there.... sometimes I think people just like to take the easy route and lump everyone into one category. Sure there are scummy breeders out there selling bad fem seeds but if you do your due diligence you can come out aces. Too many people click on the first flashy site on google, you have to take time to read about breeders as the devil is in the details (or lack of detail for bad breeders). This particular breeder takes a lot of care in their genetics and produces mostly only feminized seeds because that is what is most efficient for a lot of people, the consistency of these plants shows that.

i like feminized seeds, but you do have to be careful who you buy them from.
when i have enough room for a small breeding program, i'd still be breeding phenos i like, then feminizing them, for the convenience. i'm sure i'll keep a supply of non feminized for future breeding purposes, but the plants i would grow out would all be fems, because why waste a potential great male when i don't have anywhere to use it?

I agree and completely understand the love a lot of growers have for breeding their own phenos, thus preferring regular seeds. Then there is the group of growers who don't have the space or time to pop both males and females, aren't interested in breeding or just want to grow some frosty weed without worrying about sex. Sure the pheno hunt is limited, but that isn't the point of femmed seeds. They are strictly for convenience and efficiency. Plus, almost all reputable, big time breeders now offer fem seeds due to their popularity, so if you trust them on regular seeds it should be no different for their fems.

I think i just really dig regular seeds, for their great variety, in the genes.
I love that you can have the same seeds, but so many phenotypes.
The only downside in my eyes is you have to cull half of them.
Commercially its a big waste of electricity, money and time. Plus inconsistent.
But for the hobbyist, i think its fantastic.

Culling half of them is all of the downside, I see so many grows on this forum where people start with x plants and lose half. So much wasted energy there, which is why you do have to be a pheno enthusiast and have the ability to lose those plants (or you like breeding). For me, I have one outdoor shed to grow so I have to get all 4 of my plants right every time in order to keep supply steady. Then there is the dreaded loss of more than half the plants, which really hurts. At least there is still some hunting with fem seeds as well, they aren't clones.

For me its personal use too.
I veg for 4-6 weeks, from seed. Then flip. I know the sex within a week, and 3-4 fill my 4x4.
I've always found if i smoke clones, i get sick of the smoke fast. Its just all "the same", and i look forward to something different.
But with the regulars, i get so much great variety in the smoke. Each female, smells, tastes, smokes and feels, just slightly different.
Keeps the mind ticking.

From the bit i just read he spent some time in canada...probably BC i bet because that is ground zero for blueberry (which is DJs). I remember that from the 80s. It was one of the original purps...

So id be willing to bet the Peak seeds blueberry is close to the original.
Well that’s good to know about the blueberry, that’s where I got my cuttings ;). I flew them back sewn in my coat in tubes lol. Brought back 20 and 8 made the journey. Kept em for years until the great eastern ice storm when all I had were boat batteries and propane camping shit for 14 days lol.
