They aren't destroying the statues, they're removing them from prominent public display and putting them in museums.
This is necessary and appropriate. We as a nation have much to apologise and atone for when it comes to how we've treated our black citizens, even and perhaps especially after Emancipation.
Just today I was listening to how the FHA made postwar (WWII) loans available to developers, on the explicit condition that they exclude black families from the subdivisions. Levittown was just one of thousands constructed with FHA assistance subject to such unconstitutionally racist standards. Those who tried to build racially inclusive developments were systematically shut out of Federally backed loan programs and were unsuccessful in their attempts. Institutionalized racism, from the Feds themselves.
The relative lack of wealth in Black families can be traced in part directly back to this policy and as such we as a nation must redress the legitimate grievances of those who suffered.
Fuck racism. We need EVERYONE in our country to be treated with dignity and respect, because we cannot effectively compete on the world stage without the perspective and contributions of every race, creed and color.
This might not be a popular position today with some groups- but I think those who dislike it are doing all of us a serious disservice.
Pathetic video. As are those that post it
Wait till the hatred starts burning books. When it starts, the 'good guys' as they refer to themselves will be the ones throwing them on the fire. For the better good. A better world. A utopian society.
Same old history using the same excuses to repeat it.
Oh bullshit. You are full of shit
When the war comes, I'll shoot at you. Libtards are buying guns, now.
Such an ignoramus. Holly balls
Right wingers burn books and normalize censorship.
You mean like when Trump met with Comey and suggested he jail reporters who publish classified information?
LOL yeah, like that.
Not just with FHA loans, but also the GI Bill -- the congressional architect was a Mississippi white supremacist -- and black veterans were largely locked out of taking advantage of free college. As this book review (linked below) explains: "But Katznelson demonstrates that African-American veterans received significantly less help from the G.I. Bill than their white counterparts. "Written under Southern auspices," he reports, "the law was deliberately designed to accommodate Jim Crow." He cites one 1940's study that concluded it was "as though the G.I. Bill had been earmarked 'For White Veterans Only.' "
And that's just the tip of the iceberg! African Americans have long been denied loans and employment based solely on the racism of bank policies and the hiring policies of many companies. Black schools, past and present, always operated on shoestring funds with hand-me-down, outdated books and supplies, and many were only open for four or five months out of the year. Usually within a stone's throw from these all-black schools past and present are flourishing white schools with brand new books (today, computers and e-readers) and astroturf football fields and the highest paid teachers in the school district (yes, black teachers made far less than white teachers in the same school district).
And don't get me started on the "justice" system's mistreatment of blacks. Just about every non-white prisoner I work with today in Louisiana was convicted by an all-white jury or a white judge. And this has historical consistency as well. For a long time in America, whether north or south, blacks didn't go into a court room unless they were the accused.
This makes me sad. Like a lot of people who don't live in the South or in a big city, I seriously thought most of this had gone away after Martin Luther King Jr's activism.
We could accomplish so much more by working together.
It's time to put a stop to institutionalized racism wherever we find it. Holding down an entire race is self limiting.
What, exactly, are white people ultimately afraid of?
Losing white privilege. And that will occur as the nation's demographics shift to a non-white majority. We're in the death throes of white supremacy which is why we have the Trump phenomenon and the attempted normalization of garden variety racism.
Why are people racist? my 13-year old niece asks. I respond, "why do you think? what could possibly benefit a white person by being racist?" She then asked, do they get money for being racist? Hmmm....well there's no clearinghouse somewhere sending whites money for being/acting racist, but whites generally earn more than do blacks and white generally have more high-level employment than do blacks, and white employers generally discriminate against blacks in the hiring process. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-bias-hiring-0504-biz-20160503-story.html
Later on, my niece and I got to power. We counted the number of black senators, number of black congress people, number of black officials in state government, and eerily, we both discovered that where there are larger numbers of black citizens, there's an weird power structure that's mostly white.
Yeah, there are benefits to being racist. It's not just about hatred--that's part of it--but there are tangible benefits as well.
That's exactly the kind of education she isn't getting in school. Good for you!
When the war comes I'll be shooting at both sides.
