bottom line...if they want you, they'll get you.

you really believe they can't crack a code if they want?

Or that they have the strongest computers money can buy to do so for them?

I run linux ubuntu 12.4 just upped from 10.4 the other day and use RSA 4096 bit. Once some of these basic facts on encryption become clear, "is encryption crackable" isn't the right question because the real question is "when can it be cracked and will it matter then". This is just like Bank safes which are rated by the time it takes an attacker to crack it open and never sold as "uncrackable". Encryption strength and the number of bits used are selected based on how many decades the data needs to be kept safe. For a secure E-Commerce transaction, the data being transmitted is moot after a few decades which is why 128-bit encryption is perfectly suitable since it's considered unbreakable for the next few decades. For top secret classified data that needs to remain secret for the next 100 years, the Government uses NIST certified 256-bit AES encryption. So the next time someone tells you that encryption is crackable, ask him if he'll be around on this earth to see it demonstrated.

Linus is a step in the right direction but...
Dude, it's the us government.
They have so much money and technology as compared to it's citizens.
They do what they want.

Also before you go on with your NSA crap I'm mostly talking about IP addresses and logs. Trying not to be a retard when it come to watching what you post and where. Trust me the NSA is not caring about whats going on, on this site but DEA maybe and all your website you visit and logged by your ISP under your IP address there server sends you at connection.

I use one VPN normally, but when I post stuff regarding growing, I go through two. I'm not worried that LEO is concerned about a dude that barely clears 100k per year, they've got WAY bigger fish to fry...

I have a buddy that works for the NSA. I wouldn't worry about shit until you start pushing mad weight or doing some big shit but a couple of plants in a closet is local pd's problem. momma always said better safe than sorry though

HideMyAss has given IP addresses to the DEA before and is not a reliable VPN because of this unless you are just trying to circumnavigate censorship.

Use Tor and don't be stupid with your activity if you are worried about it. This way if you are being looked into your internet activity could not jeopardize you.

99% of people who get busted it's not from their internet activity, it's from their friends, or a nosy neighbor and light leaks and/or smell.

IF your VPN operates in the USA it will be forced to hand over your data or be shut down, honestly they probably have direct real time access to VPN logs already. These are the tactics the government has been using for a long time. VPN's were dead a long time ago, torrents killed that shit. They are no safer then using your own connection IMO. The government operates on the "if you're hiding something you must have something to hide" ideology, they will get your info from anywhere if they want it.

Tor isn't even safe. Safer, yes, but you can be tracked on Tor. If you're big-time enough to question whether you need to hide what you're posting you shouldn't be posting at all. Simple basic common sense is enough to keep you safe, don't post pictures of yourself where you live or your family or pets. Don't post where you are from. Don't post pictures of packages shipped to your house. Make sure location data is removed from pictures.

If you think you can't be tracked just remember on simple word "Terrorism".

If VPN's were even remotely safe people wouldn't use Gmails draft folder to have secret conversations.

I agree with you on the basic common sense stuff, but you are wrong on quite a few other points. I believe you are unfamiliar with how a VPN such as Tor really works.

Also, if you want to have a secret conversation, that is a silly way to go about it. Anyone with a bit of cryptology knowledge knows to use a hidden tor email service and secure your messages with a PGP key. It's much more secure and you can be sure that your messages are being sent to who you want to send them to instead of being intercepted by a MitM attack on your exit relay.

Also, good VPNs are operated globally, if it is not, do not use it. There are plenty of options that could keep prying eyes away from your true identity.

This whole "The government will find you no matter what if they want to" talk is bullshit. It's said by people who do not have a basic understanding in networking and cryptology. Some things just cannot be found, because they are not there to be found.
