Linus is a step in the right direction but...
Dude, it's the us government.
They have so much money and technology as compared to it's citizens.
They do what they want.
A burglar given time will be able to steal anything you own regardless of security as well, does that mean you should leave your valuables in the open?

HideMyAss has given IP addresses to the DEA before and is not a reliable VPN because of this unless you are just trying to circumnavigate censorship.

Use Tor and don't be stupid with your activity if you are worried about it. This way if you are being looked into your internet activity could not jeopardize you.

99% of people who get busted it's not from their internet activity, it's from their friends, or a nosy neighbor and light leaks and/or smell.
Did not know that glad I did not go with them... I went with these guys https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ reviews say there one of the best and keep no logs. not sure how true that is but they have awesome review as being much better than hidemyass.. also there not U.S. based..

Good points in this thread. Always go with an offshore (non-US based) VPN that keeps no usage logs, that way there's nothing to give over to LEO. That's where the real security lies, nothing kept, nothing to give. It is also a good idea to pay in bitcoin, that way not even your vpn knows who you are...

Well that is only to an extent. You have to think of where they government will lie in between the 9 hops (From where I live). Try this yourself and see all the places that your computer touches when it sends out a request for a web page and such. 1.) (for windows) Open command Prompt. 2.) Type in the following "tracert rollitup.org" 3.) Press "enter". It will take a few seconds ( a lot longer then if you where to just web browse) because it is tracing all the routers (Hops) it takes to get to Rollitup.org's website. If they are capturing packets from 4 hops away (Chicago) then there is nothing we can really do other than encrypt our packets with the latest and greatest (although the gov can crack them in maybe minutes). Encrypting our packets of data is all we can really do.

Do not use those online VPNs. If you really want security, use this https://www.torproject.org As you will see right away their website begins with "HTTPS". It is a web browser like Google Chrome, internet Explorer,Firefox, ect. The NSA did NOT like how private they were so they sent out a bug about 4 months back and they traced it all the way back to the NSA! HA they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar. So Tor updated its self, and over their they are REALLY dedicated to YOUR privacy, kinda like Rand paul, our next president :D So is anyone else here in the persuit of an Informational Security degree? I got a thing in the mail that asked for my opinion on topics, and one of those topics I will be voting for is the Decriminalization of marijuana. Hopefully it will go throught, which I am pretty sure it will. If y'all really want security, purchase a Separate firewall from your router.

Ask the NSA what's safe.
They have broken every encryption possible.
ANYONE can decrypt any encryption method, its the point on how long it takes to decrypt them. They collect ALL packets and only chose which ones to decrypt. They gov cant even make a website correctly. They might have a lot of power and money, but to decrypt every packet they collect is WAY WAY to intensive for the,. How could WEEEEEE the voters even let it get this bad. Both Republican voters and Democrat voters got screwed because first it started with Bush, then Obama, who also expanded the Gov into our healthcare. The gov is WAY to big. Rand paul says he is about security and a Huge downsize of the gov. Hopefully that is true and we will see the gov go back to there rightful place "slaves the to masters, we the people."

All VPNs are encrypted so not even your ISP sees anything past the VPN , no searches , no website ,no downloads so it can hop all over the world and there's just useless encrypted data..
with my IP that’s in Germany.. note the trace started in Gremany even though I'm in the USA

i feel as though if you encrypt you are just asking them to spy on you honestly, we are talking about the F'ING NSA and you are talking about a 40$ encryption program..now i dont know alot about computers but i know they have endless resources,,,

Most of the best encryption programs are free and open source, so anyone can download and look at the code...
I'll end here, VPNs and encryption programs are a 100 times better than nothing at all..

Couldn't give two damns personally. If the government wants to know what i'm doing on the internet, they'll find out what i'm doing on the internet. and well, i don't do shit on the internet so they can look all they want.

Well this thread was not aimed at people like you. But more to people that do care about government,ISPs,LEO looking into the Internet activity.
There's so many dumbasses in prison that like you did not give a damn.

As per my experience, i use purevpn because i like its 256 bit encryption feature. The other reason is it's quite cheap just 2.49/month which is bit low with a dozens of security features.
