Root problem

Hey, i transplanted one of my plants yesterday to put it in a bigger pot. Its about 20 days old i think and the growth had really slowed so thought it might have needed a bigger pot

Now when i removed it from its old pot the roots where all bundled around the top of the pot, it was like a disc of roots about 2cm deep. Why did it do this? Im using john innes soil for seedlings, i dont really like this soil as it seems really fine kinda like sand so it gets compacted and quite dense and heavy, could the soil be the problem?

Wish id taken a pic now so you could see what i mean, i might transfer the other plant tommorow so il keep my camera handy incase its the same (which i suspect it is)
Thanks for any help :blsmoke:

Sandy soil isn't necessarily a bad thing but if you don't have perlite it can be. When you water, do get water running out of the bottom of your planter?
