Rove Beetle

Any idea what this is? I've seen aphids, and looked up pictures of thrips, looks like neither. Seems to be sucking a vein on the leaf, thought it might just be walking on it. This is an outdoor plant on the US East Coast zone 5B.

The insect is shiny, dark brown to black, segmented, wingless, a slow mover with short legs. It's about 1/4" long, maybe a little less. There was another one nearby on the same leaf but it fell off.

Any help would be extremely appreciated, I'm 2-3 weeks from harvest. They just showed up, I look her over daily.

I see no damage on the leaf, but again they're new visitors. I haven't had any issues lately, just finishing up the last few weeks to harvest.

Someone tell me this is a beneficial bug, and not a plant killer.

UPDATE: The only insect I've found that resembles this is the Rove beetle, which I am aware of as being beneficial. Anyone see a Rove beetle?

An entomologist tells me he's 99% certain it's a Rove beetle. Staphylinidae, is actually what he called it.

Insect and mite eater. Hired.
