Russian Comfrey Fert

I make a kick ass organic fert from Russian Comfrey, thought I would write a post outlining my method for those who are interested.

The correct strain of Comfrey is Bocking 14 - easily found on line - comes as a root -costs about €1 a root - this is the only time you will have to buy anything. Plant in accordance with the supplier´s instructions. If you have a damp spot in your garden, that is a great place to plant the Comfrey roots. Here is my Comfrey bed.



Get a large plastic bottle - I find a 8 litre mineral water bottle to be fine. Fill it 2/3 with water, then pull leaves off the comfrey and stuff them in the bottle until it is very full.



Every day shake the bottle and unscrew the cap to release the gases that accumulate - they smell like a fart to be proud of.

After two weeks pick more leaves and stuff the bottle full again - keep on shaking.

After a month you are ready to strain the concoction, pass it through a sieve and remove the remaining solid material. This can be dug in as a solid fert but also makes a good compost activator.

The final product is a dark, very smelly liquid that is diluted 20:1 with water and fed to your girls.

And the results?

Brilliant!!

It is one of a couple of ferts that I use alternately, and also with plain water, the other being BioCanna, but my overall results are pleasing. Of course there are so many other influences to take into account, but a yield of 26 ounces for one plant of White Widow can't be bad. I get so many yields of over a pound a plant anyway.

Over a pound dry? i suppose this is outdoors? if so im buying this thing tomorrow it will grow so nicely in my backyard..

Oh yes vlad, outdoors of course. Dried weight.

What else do you use besides the homemade comfrey juice?

I'm going to plant some next spring, it's a little late in the season for this year. Have a nice spot for it too.

Excellent Wetdog - hope it works well for you.

My comfrey bed is the best ever this year - I have far more than I can use - the surplus will add a good load of nutes to my compost.

I do the same thing with weeds in my yard. I throw them into a 55 gallon trash can with water, aerate continuously for a few weeks and am left with a very similar looking solution as you. I use it in veggie garden, not my herb garden .

would you suggest this in a dwc? or is it not provide all the nutrients. I've also heard conflicting accounts on using molasses in a dwc. anyone have any experience doing any of this?

Do you have any info on Biocanna? I'll just search.
