So I tossed out tons of BreadBox Poppy Seeds, I didn't really expect anything (they were just normal food variety. 5 pounds of seeds for 20$ or so.)

They all ended up sprouting, thousands of em, but most died off as seedlings, only a few remained. Really only he ones which landed in good soil, they seem to be extremely picky about where they want to grow.I took care of the ones who lived. Maybe 15 in total. None of them excelled, and have fairly small pods, but im glad I got them to grow. Next year I'm going to make a bed specifically for them.. and try to find a good deal on bulk seeds of a better genetic. Perhaps Gigantums, or Danish Flag, etc. I mean it's weird you can get 5 pounds of seeds for 20$, but if you want to buy a species with better genetics, you'l end up paying 5$ for a tiny packet of seeds, no more than 100-300 seeds.) Seems dumb.

Your more likely to have better success in prepard soil. Poppies love loose sandy slightly rocky soil.
But loss soil with afar amount of drainage should be fine. I recommend buying from an actual poppy seed sellers. Better germination and sprouts seeing they were grow for the following season. Pepper box? I never heard of breadbox. Anyway look into a real grower to get seeds. Good job though they look good

Oh yeah poppies prefer cooler weather. Not hot, so if it gets real hot there in the summer plant them in partial shady Area during the hottest part of the day. When they are hot the will fall over and also the heat encourages early flowers and small plants

Thanks. Yea I'm sure it's pepper box. Not too familiar with all the genetics names. The flowers were white, with pink centers. Just 4 large petals. After the petals have fallen off, it seems the pods are still growing a bit. Some of them are fairly big now. Interestingly, it seems a bug dug into the one of them, at the very top of the stem, where it connects to the base of the pod, and the entire stem/all the leaves were coated in black tar this morning. Scraped up as much as I could. The rest are still going. Hopefully will end up with enough for a nice pot of tea in the end. Never tasted opium before, it's probably the most bitter flavor ever. Kind of gross ha.

Do you think I should bleed them at all, or just let the latex build up until harvest?

DON'T LANCE THEM. That's probably going to cause you problems if so one see' s the cuts
Just let them swell for a week to ten days. They'll have s gray blueish green color and the crown will be flat out or up. Then cut the pods. Afterwards they may grow more smaller flowers. Don't lance them. Just make tea. Let a pod dry on one plant. It well turn yellow when the seeds are ripe

Start out small with tea. Each pod varies in potency. Even though their small they can cause you to O.D. if your familiar with opiates five to eight small pods should be enough for relief. I used to be a heavy morphine/heroin addict . at that time it took 35 to 45 golf ball to baseball size pods to curve my withdrawal. Hopefully this helps you. If your not in pain or are an addict Please don't abuse these plants.. Oh and the 35 to 45 pods was 1 cup of tea, not a pot of tea

Oh .. I unfortunately have a heavy opiate tolerance. Anyway where I live there's not much chance of anyone seeing the pods. I live in the sticks.

How strong are the pods? I heard there equivilent of 10-100mg of morphine per pod. So the average pod would be about 50-60mg assuming. I imagine each plant has several pods.

Can you top them to get more pods?

Nope. The pods I used back then were ordered through venders and dry. Back then I use to read people saying how nasty they were..they tasted like tea..the dry pods. Green pods there is a lot more plant fats and so forth but even then when steeped it's not thick, just a sleight film on top of the water

None I ever had. From what I've read over the years Afghan poppies in Afghanistan and even the golden triangle poppies at best were 20 mg. The average poppy grown in the states vairy from 0.5 to 5mg per pod. The higher potency over in the Asiatic country is do to the higher elevation. This is just morphine. The over all alcholoid count is much higher because there are over 27 alcholoids. Codine, thiebane, papaverine and so forth. The Hungarian poppy is the strongest.but good luck trying for them.
Anyways enough of me trying to be smart.
I wouldn't top before the first flower, but that's just me. If you want multiple pods gets some Izmir Bush poppy seeds. They produce lots of small pods and are fairly potent for their size.
Here's my run down on the poppies I like. Tasmanian ( the real ones have elongated oval shape). Peshawar var.album Persian white, Zahir ( small beautiful potent poppy), Dutch ovallies, ( barral shape pods), Turkish giant ( pair shape pod), hens'n'chicks, afghan, and Gigatimums( baseball to softball size pods. This is my run down from strongest to ok. There are many others I've had that were basically the same to me in potency

So today I found another 13-16 poppy plants I hadn't even seen until today. They grew underneath of a giant rose bush, so have only now become visible. They are even larger than the others I have been taking care of. Must like the soil there... but they were also grown in prob 50% shade so that might of contributed also. Will take pictures once my camera is charged.

Also tonight is the night for testing. About 4 large pods, and 3 small pods for one cup of tea. Will report back later. :P

Haha Yea im still here. The dose ended up being a bit weak. Definitely had some nice relaxation going on, but im going to double the dose next time. That sounds about what would work at least. I still haven't taken the pictures of the new found patch.. camera was dead, then it got taken by my sister.

I'll post some pics of the dried pods later if I remember. :)

So up next: 8 Large pods, and a few tiny ones.
