Ok folks i been reading around a few sites and this one seems to have the most experienced builders when it comes to led and cob so i want some input.first off i have watched pretty much all the @Growmau5 vids and really appreciate all his input as well as the rest of you too many to remember lol.what im hoping since i lost a bunch of my links i thought i saved here that i can get some help.im trying to keep this in the usa but im willing to use other suppliers if necessary but im trying to do all these transactions with a single credit card .also i dont much care for paypal lol.
Anyhow what im looking to build is a diy cob setup that will keep up with a gavita so i can do a side by side here,already have multiple gavitas,multiple 600w hps and mh and a mars 1600w all in my flower room.so once im done ill just remove a 600 or 2 and hang this cob and start the show.
I would like to keep my wall draw under 700w for this and from what im reading it sounds like i should be around 600 to 650w to compete with gavita and kill any 600w hps right?
So i want to use the 3500k cob 3590 .i dont really care about dimming but i did see some digital controller that would handle dimming and you could even program a sunrise/sunset type of dimming which would appeal to me so maybe dimming will be in there lol.
Thought i seen a riu sponsor that sold the round pin heatsinks in a package deal 4 sinks and some cob holders and reflectors.then there was another sponsor or member that had a good grip of cob 3590 for sale (i would like top bin or damn close) and then i saw someone just post about a new meanwell driver which probably just complicated my life more haha.anyhow i got some general electronic exp and a good grip of tools,hell i could even make my own hood from sheetmetal but I just like the looks of these round heat sinks so im leaning towards aluminum L channel to assemble the setup.i kinda want to use more than 8 cobs,what im looking to do is cover a 5x5 area just like i do my plants.more than likely my cob fixture will be around 4.5 x 4.5 the smallest i want is 4 x 4 because i want even light over this 5 x 5.my mars panel is way too bright in the center and weak out around the 4 foot area.so anyways there you have it.

Hey man glad you stopped by.budget is not an issue although i dont want to just waste cabbage lol.i would build a 4 x 4 if you think ill have good coverage out at the 5 foot mark.i really like those white plastic open style reflectors you showed on one of those videos i think you called them angelina ?
Effeciency i would like it to make sense like i dont want to waste power like hid does.somewhere close to 50% sound doable?
I was also thinking about making some of the outer lights swivel so i could tweak it,may be just the corner lights but maybe thats not needed if i do a 10 or 12 light fixture with those reflectors idk.

yeah buddy. Green Gene championed the 90 deg LEDIL angelinas back in the day, so check out his vids too for comments on their performance.
I am going to copy and paste a response that I sent to someone via email this morning. check it out and see if it applies to you. Any others that read it, make sure my numbers and calcs are correct. my feelings wont be hurt to make edits or corrections.

I would recommend a universal bar type system. I am not including shipping in these price estimates, or quantity discounts .

I am going to recommend a slightly higher drive current setup for you to minimize upfront costs while preserving efficiency and flexibility to dim later for higher efficiency once you have enough bars to cover the space fully. This spec will cost you more on heatsinks upfront, but you will get an extra 50w per bar with this setup.

BAR MODEL 250w each wall dissipation @ 51-52% efficient for 130 PAR watts per bar. (120 heat watts per bar)

(4) Cree cxb3590 36volt version : mix of 3500k, 4000k, a couple 5k total. top bins (see incl spread sheet of top bin codes)
suppliers: Kingbrite, Cutter Electronics, Pacific Light Concepts. not sure of current coupon codes, but check!
best price with a discount code from pacific light concepts is $43.02 each

(1) meanwell HLG 240h-c1750b : <--- get the b version here, so you can dim for higher efficiency later runs 4 cobs at 62 watts each
suppliers: Bravo Electronics, Mouser, Online Components.com ($75ea)

(1) 30-34" heatsink for active cooled(with a computer fan on top of each bar), or go 42-48" for a passive setup, heres the math on the heatsink based on attached spreadsheet titled (HeatsinkUSA)
the 5.886" www.heatsinkusa.com profile has 40.31 in2 of surface area per one inch of length. So to handle the 120 heat watts passively, the bars will have to be pretty long at 42-48" ($75 per bar)

(4) Ideal cree cob holders part# 50-2303CR (newark.com) ($2.50 ea)
thermal paste

4-40 or 6-32 mounting screws (amazon)

a bunch of 18 gauge solid core wire

Wago connectors for easy connections on DC led & AC plug ends. 222-412 lever nuts ($15 per 50 pack)

So assuming you buy a bunch of wire, connectors, thermal paste and screws, the cost of the components per bar will be approx: $332

Each bar will be the equivalent of a 342watt HPS single end.

ROI Calculations

Each bar will save you 92 watts at the wall over HPS. And 314 BTU of heat per hour over HPS.
Per day savings in a 12/12 flowering room will be (.092 kW)(12 hr) = 1.104 KwH savings per day per bar. @ your rate?? assuming 15 cents/KwH
$0.1656 savings per bar per day. or $5 per month per light over HPS, ($60 per year savings , per bar over HPS)

Lets assume a highend 600w HPS with a nice big air cooled reflector and a digital ballast, hortilux bulb costs $400-500
Two of these bars will crush it since they are equivalent to 684w of HPS, but their cost is $332ea x2 = $664

At $164 price difference you are looking at ROI in 2.73 years based off of only electrical savings, not very impressive right?
when you factor in HVAC savings of 3768 BTU per day, 113,040 BTU per month, 1,356,480 BTU per year, things start making sense.
(impossible to calc BTU savings without knowing your HVAC system and environmental factors)

In closing, I don't know your skill level as a grower, but I can pull around 0.88 grams per watt with 600w HPS. (528g per run)
I can pull 1.5 GPW ++ all day long with cree cobs. If I had these bars, I would estimate 375g per bar per 8-9 wk run. or (750g per pair of bars)
So when you factor in increased production of an extra half pound of bud per pair of bars, all the sudden these LEDs start paying themselves off very very quickly.

I hope this helps and wasnt too confusing. let me know if you have any more questions.

we wont know for sure on the pretapped Cutter sinks til next week , on how much they will be a la carte.

however, you may want to speak to @robincnn he is sourcing some round pin heatsinks as well, they may work very nicely for what you got going on.

thats awesome man. a junction box is a highly needed accessory, esp for newer people that are intimidated by solder and heatshrink.

Its a plastic junction box with some PG7, PG9, PG11 connectors for cables from driver AC/DC side, Power cable and cob wires, wagos for connecting wires. Trying to add a potentiometer option. I will have some pics this friday. It will be like a better version of this with more ports.


It should resolve wiring issues like this.

hey guys wanted some input on these cobs CXB3590-0000-000N0HCB30G its the 3000k and says they are 36v and 2.8a but im still not clear on all these dif bin# and other info with all the dif chip options.can i use these on the same driver with 3590 3500k cd bin without issues?im just looking to get a little better spectrum using 2 dif chips and im ready to pull the trigger on 10 or 20 of these is they work for what im trying to do.im thinking 3 3500k cobs and 2 3000k cobs per fixture/driver instead of just 5 3500k.thoughts?

yeah i got some 3500k coming from plc but im all about the mixed spectrums.i run about a 60/40 mix of hps and mh in my room now so i guess i just really want to mix these cobs so i can get a decent look at the side by side with my current setup.as long as they wont cause problems using them on the same driver.

I am building a new space with two 4x4 rooms, finished the room today, I ordered (12) 3590 CB 35K for each side from Cutter they have a kit that includes (4) cobs, Ideal Holder, Ideal Adapter to suit Ledil Angelina and Graphite Thermal Interface. the 4 cob kits sells for $184 plus s/h but with the discount it covered most of that so to my door about $44 per unit.
