Sour diesel journal, green as can be, hope it's in my thumbs

I've grown plants outdoors from bag found seeds, but this is my first attempt at growing via hydroponics.

Some guy was selling equipment, as he had bought it and never had the motivation to set it up. It was a tub, with a Plexiglas lid (cut for ten 6" nets), a 600w super hps light with hood, ten 6" nets, nutrients, a rainforest vortex pump, a ton of hydroton, ballast, and a bunch of books. I didn't take the tub with me, figuring that it was too much of a hassle and I just didn't like the idea of my system looking that way.

I ran over to home depot and grabbed 2x4s and put up three walls in my basement (I'll add pics of my grow room eventually). While browsing the isles, I saw a cabinet that is easily assembled, that had four shelves. I figured that would be perfect for my clone section.

The next day, I hit the closest hydroponics shop in my area, armed with a list of things that I needed to acquire. Electronic ph/ppm/temp pen, air stones, ebb and flow table, new fluorescent fixtures, a couple bulbs to go with that, an ez cloner, some black and white pvc film, were just a few of the preliminary things.

I lined the walls with the film, white side on four, and black on the floor (to help visually during clean ups). The cabinet I bought, I placed in corner of the new room, and used the black and white to build a tent like structure for the top two shelves.

This guy we know, hooked me up with a tray of sour diesel clones. I decided to recut the stems, dip them in fresh cloning gel and put them in my new ezcloner. When I told him about this, he wasn't too thrilled, but I figure trial and error is a good way to learn, along with other people's knowledge. I few of the girls did die off, but I still have 18 alive and breathing well.

It's been about 8 days since I started this whole project, and tonite I took a couple pics of the roots peeking out. Seeing the roots really brought a little bit of something to me, as it's showing progress, and that's a good thing. I'm probably going to update this as new things occur.

I'd be careful of that exposed rockwool. Look at nongreenthumbs thread, that dude does something with trash bags or something to block the light from covering hitting his rockwool.

I have a dome over the tray, and the cloner doesn't have anything over it. On each four sides of the shelf they're on is the pvc film white side in. One of the clones in the oasis cubes sprouted roots that were out of the cube, so I moved that into the eb'n flo today. That too is covered with pvc film white side up to help the bottom leaves get some love. this pvc film really came in handy so far, I'm probably going to upgrade to mylar for the walls.

I'm really surprised how fast the roots are growing in the ezcloner, they must have grown an inch over night. The one's in the tray haven't shown signs, except for the one I moved yesterday, so I'm hoping in the next few days I'll see some popping out of the oasis cubes.

Backtracking just a wee bit.

I had a nutrient problem with the ezcloner at first, the leaves got spotty, and the stems had a purplish tint to them. They were developing more nodes and sprouting leaves, but the roots had yet to appear. I flushed the system and just kept 5.2 ph water in it. That was last week, and a few days after is when the roots started appearing. I'm not sure when I should add nutrients back in, maybe if someone reads this they can add a lil insight.

Since no one gave me any of their insight (even asked in the aeroponics thread) I figure I'll give them some nuts tomorrow. The stems are reverting back to the bright green they once were, and the new leaves sprouting look pretty healthy. Gonna hit them with lil bloom and grow and see what happens, not too much, maybe a 1/4 tsp each, there's two gallons of water in the ezcloner.

The clones in the dome still haven't produced roots like their one sister, I'm hoping in the next few days I'll see something new in them. I eventually don't want to use the tray anymore, seeing that the ezcloner is just that, much easier to maintain.

If anyone knows, and is willing to respond, is sour diesel a harder type to clone from, slower, etc.

Ok, so it's been 9 days since I moved the first plant with juicy roots into my ebb n flo set up. I took a crappy pic the day I moved her (I miss my Nikon) and a so so pic tonite when I checked on her. Looks like she's coming along, I'm hoping her sisters catch up, it's been 17 days and the roots aren't ready for the move.

She's coming along nicely, moved her into a new home. I added two more airstones for more bubbles. I up'd her food about another 500ppm, slowly adding in some meals to coax her to grow. Lots of new growths are spouting out of her, while her sisters seem to be a bit stagnant. I figure I'll just clone this one when the time is right.

This morning I moved the ballast outside of the grow room, I figure it'll help keep the temps down. The room temp isn't bad, but the res temp has risen and I added a frozen bottle of water to remedy the issue for now. I have to find something for a more permanent solution. The stores I like to go to while baked are closed today, guess I'll hit em tomorrow and see what kinda stuff I can come up with. I took a couple more pics today, I figure a couple each day will help my documentation and give me something to look back on. There's a bit of a twist on one of the leaves, I'm thinking it's from me transferring her, guess I'll know in the next couple days, I'm sure she'll recover.

Day 14 of what I now call "Athena" she's proven to be the strongest and coming along nicely. 5.8 ph, 18/6 lighting, 1 part grow and 1 part bloom with the ppm around 1150. The water temp is about 74-78, which I'm not sure if I should have a concern for, I read other people keep it around 68 or close to that. Feel free to comment if you have any ideas.

Day 15 - The leaves seem to be getting fatter, or it's just me, wakin an bakin. The water temp seems to be keeping at a steady 78, the one day it had risen to 81, which is when I added two bottles of frozen water to cool it down some. Ph went down to 5.6 but I won't add any up till I check it later in the day. Ppm is at 1420, although I didn't add any more food, what's the reason for that? She looks quite healthy though, all the leaves have a nice color to them, no spots, no yellow tips but I'm wondering why some stems have a slight purple tint. The newly formed stems are nice and bright green, and the ones with a slight tint are only on one side of it.

Day 16 - ph 5.71 ppm 1436 water temp 76.3. Yesterday the water temp went up to 81.2, I tossed in those two frozen bottles of water again. Doesn't seem like the plant has any problems with the water temp, but I guess I'm doing it to be safe. I'm gonna have to find a local aquarium shop and invest in a cooler. There's a few new leaves branching off, I love seeing progress. The smell is getting stronger everyday, which just gives me a head rush. I'm thinking in another two weeks I'll start pulling some clones off Athena since mostly all of the other ones didn't make it. I did end up planting another clone yesterday, and it looks like Athena did when I first moved her.

I added in two gallons of cold water, lowering the ppm to 1050 and brought the ph up to 5.8, let's see how Athena likes it.

Day 17 - Ph 5.82, water temp 74.5, ppm 1152. She's filling out in all the right places. The one leaf that had a slight twist in it, seems to have twisted just a bit more. I'm gonna take a peak at the roots after I wake up a bit more and hit the store. Counting down the days till I can pull some clones off.

Day 18 - Ph 5.81, water temp 74.5, ppm 1160. I had to calibrate my electronic pen, one of my more expensive toys, almost 200 bucks but it measures everything. Usually I'm up before the lights go on, but last night was drinking night, the girl in my bed woke me up with her breath. I was trying to get some decent pics of the pistils on Athena, but my eye sight is a bit off focus. I think in a few more days she might be ready for a slight pruning.
