Sowing Seeds in the Fall: Wild Propagation

Question: has anybody ever tried sowing some seeds outdoors in the fall to grow the following spring?

Theoretically if one had access to a cold harty strain (I.E. something bred to withstand the temperate climate of the Midwest, for instance), couldn't a favorable spot be cleared in a fertile area and seeded in the fall? From what I understand, seeds naturally drop in the fall anyway and sprout the next spring in places like Nebraska that have wild hemp... that's not to say it is the same thing, but, in theory it could work right?

I also know that it can be hard to go from seed in an untended outdoor patch if you plant in the spring because, put simply, everything else had "sprung" and unless you want to pick through grassy for your tiny sprouts and weed around them meticulously, they lack any competitive advantage over native vegetation.

I'm thinking it might be fun to sow a few hundred seeds in a fertile ditch bank and see what pops up next year... if anything. Im sure only a few will even germinate. Before anybody jumps in to say "you won't get good bud with an untended patch, bruh", I know. It would just be an experiment to see if such a wild grow would be possible without much intervention... an experiment.

Just tossing it out there, what do you guys think? Has anybody done this?

Hahah glad somebody did!
Fresh seeds need to cure a bit before they'll readily germinate. I'd imagine that seeds dropped by a fall bearing plant go dormant before they've aged enough to germinate. Seeds that have been saved would be ready to germinate and probably start to as soon as they got wet.

I may find out. LEOS found one of my patches. Three plots with 11 plants {I think}. I assumed they were chopped. but when I went for a look see, they were still there. Most likely I am going to let them die. Will see if they sprout in the spring.

How interesting. Years ago I too let a few go to seed in a field and left em. Next year, a few scraggly ferals were sprouted near the mother, but none of them were healthy.... I assumed the indoor Amsterdam genetics didnt fare to well in my neck of the woods.

I hope you aren't in any trouble with those LEOs friend. How'd you find out they found your patch?

Five county cars and a helo. A cousin sent word to me, so I just stayed away. Some hard looks, but no knock on the door. It's been 3 months, so I feel better about it everyday.

Only one of the three strains was something I really care about, and I have lots of those seeds, so no big deal. There was a bag seed strain I was hoping to make some seeds from though. It was a decent diesel. There were 5 plants of it, and I don't know how many of those turned out to be male. If there are multiple males I doubt I would use the seeds even if I could get in there to collect them.

Damn dude you got lucky! I have known of people who weren't so lucky. Just keep a low profile! I would suggest going back in a few weeks when everything is all brown and dead from the fall temps, your seeds should be nice and cured by then and (Im guessing) the patch won't be being watched anymore.... but if you get a whiff of LEO dont go near and certainly never grow there again.

In terms of multiple males from multuple strains, hey I'd try em and see what you get. Hybrids tend to grow more vigorously and, while it may not be a "name brand" strain, I've grown some neat and high yielding hybrids that were pleasing for a season. Trouble is you can't replicate a hybrid for seeds unless you cross the same two stable strains... just the nature of genetics. Plus side is you may get some nice plants from those seeds... providing you don't get caught going back for them!

I assume they have cameras on them. A few years back a buddy of mine had leased some timber land for hunting. A patch was found on it, and the game wardens showed him now they did the setup. There is a battery about the size of a coffee can that is buried a few feet away from the plant. The camera itself is tiny, and on the end of a cable. They run it so they get a closeup when you lean down to water the plants. I never tend plants without a turkey mask, but my concern is how far away might there be cameras. Most of my patches were within a couple three miles of this one, so I worried about going to any of my plants after this happened. My full seasons are dried and curing now, but I am starting my fall/winter grow, so still concerned.

And I am not scared of trying seeds of questionable parentage. The other plot that was compromised was seeds made with hermie pollen. There was two plants in last year's fall/winter grow that I let go a long time. One of them hermied and I didn't know it until they got chopped. I used the seeds from the straight female, just to see what they would do. But I have plenty of those seeds too.

Wow better safe than sorry man. I would just stay the fuck away. Your freedom isnt worth some seeds.
