what does it mean when they say recommended cooling btu's?

More like Spectrum Jester.

I veg under cfl and flower under led, but don't drink the koolaid. no matter how much you spend you'll probably never beat the good old workhorse 600w mh/hps for about $150

That's like saying the technology of yesterday will never become outdated and obsolete.... have you ever been to a flea market before? The shit they sell and had twenty years ago, hell ten years ago, is comical in comparison to what we now have.

This "koolaid" is a gift from the gods above... this is the drank they drink...
