A close friend of mine also went with me to 'meet' this strange out of town fellow who said he was looking to setup shop here in the Colorado area. My friend works in the security field, so he is valuable to me for more reasons than I can count. Anyways, we meet with this stranger, he has a rental car, and says he's from out of state. We ask for some positive ID, he doesn't want to show us any.(claims ID theft a concern). We ask if he will consent to a pat-down and radio sweep (checks for bugs that transmit any conversation) and he says no reason to, he's clean. BS. Basically this jerk is looking for targets to hit NOW and in the very near future. He places Craigslist ads and wants to meet with you, to discuss things further. He will size you up and ask what growing methods you use, and what size your grow is. If you say Hydro he lights up like a pinball machine and gets real interested in your op. Wants to know how much you can provide and when, how many plants you grow, if you can grow at least 100 or more and what strains can you provide. After we decided this guy was FED, we told him we were uncomfortable with his stance and left it at that.

After we left him, my security friend tells me the guy was transmitting via a voice operated mic, (only turns on when people speak) and that he was lying thru his teeth. When you transmit to a radio or other device it emits Radio Frequency Energy and it can be detected.

The LASER-3000 monitoring system has to be used when access to a room is otherwise impossible. The laser transmitter, with its beam being in the invisible infrared waveband, has to be directed to a window of the room to be monitored. A portion of the laser beam will be reflected by the window pane. The receiving part of the LASER-3000 picks up the reflected laser and converts it into electric signals which, after filtering, are amplified and fed into headphones and/or recording devices.
The laser transmitter and receiver are built in a special splash-proof aluminum housing, allowing the system to be operated in inclement weather conditions. The state-of-the-art semiconductor laser is extremely mechanically robust and, due to its low power consumption, a running time of approximately 50 hours can be achieved by each battery set.

Laser microphone

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

A diagram of a simple laser microphone.

The main type of laser microphone is a surveillance device that uses a laser beam to detect sound vibrations in a distant object. The object is typically inside a room where a conversation is taking place, and can be anything that can vibrate (for example, a picture on a wall) in response to the pressure waves created by noises present in the room. The object preferably has a smooth surface. The laser beam is directed into the room through a window, reflects off the object and returns to a receiver that converts the beam to an audio signal. The beam may also be bounced off
the window itself. The minute differences in the distance traveled by the light as it reflects from the vibrating object are detected

interferometrically. The interferometer converts the variations to intensity variations, and electronics are used to convert these variations to signals that can be converted back to sound.

This technology can be used to eavesdrop with minimal chance of exposure. However, countermeasures exist in the form of specialized light sensors that can detect the light from the beam. Rippled glass can be used as a defense, as it provides a poor surface for a laser microphone.
The television series Burn Notice has depicted one of the show's fictional spies thwarting a laser microphone by taping a running vibrator to the window.

A new type of laser microphone is a device that uses a laser beam and smoke or vapor to detect sound vibrations in free air. On 25 August 2009, U.S. patent 7,580,533 issued for a Particulate Flow Detection Microphone based on a laser-photocell pair with a moving stream of smoke or vapor in the laser beam's path. Sound pressure waves cause disturbances in the smoke that in turn cause variations in the amount of laser light reaching the photo detector. A prototype of the device was demonstrated at the 127th Audio Engineering Society convention in New York City from 9 through 12 October 2009. A video made at AES by Gearwire can be found via the external link, below.

  • The Camera Finder reveals the presence of any camera, Wired or wireless, even if the power is off.
  • Portable, the size of a Bic Lighter to fit in your pocket.
  • Just look through the viewfinder and press the button. Any Hidden Camera is illuminated and its position revealed.
Easy 3 Step CameraFinder Use

Protect Yourself from Prying Eyes

Camera Finder is an easy-to-use Hidden Camera Detector. Simply look through the viewing port and scan any room to reveal the exact location of concealed Wireless and Wired Cameras. Use it in dressing rooms or gym locker rooms to protect yourself from prying eyes. Give your loved ones peace-of-mind knowing their privacy has not been compromised.
BrickHouse Security recommends the Camera Finder, the only device that works well and fits in your pocket, giving you portable protection. This Hidden Camera Detector is so simple to use many of our clients buy an extra one for their mother or wife.

The Camera Finder Hidden Camera Detector/Locator is the most reliable, user-friendly technology on the market, allowing you to make sure that you are not being watched. It uses optical augmentation; a phenomenon whereby light reflected from a focused optical system, such as a Video Camera, is reflected along the same path as the incident light. If a Hidden Camera is illuminated and viewed with the Camera Finder, then a strong reflection from the target camera will reveal its position to the user.
The Camera Finder takes advantage of this phenomenon by using a ring of ultra-bright LEDs arranged around a viewing port. When a user scans a room looking through the viewing port, a Hidden Camera appearing in the field of view will brightly reflect the light from the LEDs.
To scan an area, simply look through the viewing port and depress the button to activate the LEDs. Slowly scan areas where Hidden Cameras are suspected and look for bright-reflected spots. Remember, most Hidden Video Cameras use Pinhole Camera Lenses, so the spot you are looking for could be small.
If you see a suspected camera, move your vantage point slightly. If the location of the reflection moves as you move, then this is not a camera. If the location of the reflection does not move, then it is highly likely that you have discovered the optics of a Hidden Camera.

Jammers and "bugs" are illegal in the US. "Bugs" are illegal under federal law and I wanna say the FCC controls jammers. Their reasoning for keeping them illegal has to do with blocking someones ability to call 911 when they need to. About the only place you will find them in the US in on the front of the president's car blocking possible IED triggers.

By in large law enforcement is bared from using technology like this. If someone is using a laser to record the vibrations off your window you are probably involved in an international drug ring and might just be dealing with the CIA's counter narcotics team. Again though the possibilities of this happening are on par with you finding that seeds magically jumped out of your bag and grew, harvested and dried themselves all while you were at work.

I would also like to point out how big of a boner you will give your local fat ass cop when he discovers your grow (felony #1) and then the cell jammer you ordered from the UK off the internet (felony #2).

I'd recommend Understanding Surveillance Technologies: Spy Devices, Privacy, History & Applications by J.K. Petersen. The book is thick but the historical info is good albeit dated. Covert Surveillance: The Manual of Surveillance Training by Peter Jenkins is also a good book for less technological means of surveillance. "Countering Hostile Surveillance: Detect, Evade, and Neutralize Physical Surveillance Threats" as well as "Surveillance Countermeasures: A Serious Guide To Detecting, Evading, And Eluding Threats To Personal Privacy" by ACM IV Security Services are great books on the counter surveillance side of things. Silent Warfare: Understanding the World of Intelligence by Abram Shulsky and Gary Schmitt has been highly recommended to me but I haven't gotten a copy yet. The link in my sig gives good insight into internet SIGINT.

Sweeping for covert listening devices (CLD) is not simple and be ready to spend tens of thousands of dollars on test equipment to properly screen for CLDs. Simple toys that you get out of spy catalogs (or make if you are competent) can do basic detection against cheap crap but when faced with a competent enemy things get much more difficult and expensive. For example a nonlinear junction detector (NLJD) can cost well over $10K and doesn't include the equipment you are going to need to verify what the NLJD dectected (metal detector, x-ray, et al.) Good spectrum analyzers are several thousand easily.

Obviously, where possible, any device capable of transmitting signals (cellphone) should be left at home when committing any crime. I recently watched a program featuring two drug dealers, one of whom butt dialed 911 while talking about a shipment of drugs. CLDs are irrelevant in an age when everyone carries around a device capable of transmitting audio and video.

Aside from the obvious the biggest SIGINT threat I see for people like us is the use of a signalling device inside a package being delivered as part of a CD. In another post I have indicated the police are using this tactic.

Rick Collins said:
Given the headaches presented by savvy suspects, law enforcers are taking a new approach: wiring the package to signal when it's opened. When someone opens a package, that's good evidence that he's the one who knowingly intended to possess it, right? It might even be stronger evidence than signing for it. The application for the search warrant will request authorization to execute the raid once the signal goes off. Several jurisdictions have begun using electronic signaling devices, typically AT-4's, to confirm that a target has opened his package. No part of the device is visible unless the package is opened. It makes no audible sound but transmits an alert signal to a remote receiver manned by the agents. These devices are perfect in cases where a signature request might spook the target. An AT-4 can make the difference between a botched operation and a valid arrest and raid. Be aware that it's likely the wave of the future.
A simple way to prevent signal leaks (like from a CLD or tracking device used during a CD) is to construct a Faraday cage. Anyone interested in SIGINT should already know about this and even if you don't just Google it or watch Enemy of the State. Magic bags are basically portable Faraday cages designed to block RF signals from tags. Similar designs could be deployed to prevent signal leakage from cellphones. Obviously it would be necessary to test for signal leakage before deploying such a device.

Anyone in need of a rf jammer would be better off constructing it themselves since they are laughably simple devices (assuming your target isn't proactively scanning for jamming signals.) Expect a serious FCC fine and/or up to a year in jail if you are caught using one (think triangulation). Though to be honest I can't see any practical application of a cell jammer for a grower. Maybe if you want to rip off a jewelry store since many alarm companies seem to use the existing phone and cellphone infrastructure for sending out alarms, but not for growing.

There is always the risk of catching LEO authored malware like CIPAV. Throwaway computing is a good idea to help prevent this. The TAILS live cd[url] comes to mind. Having a computer that is never connected to the internet for storing/decrypting sensitive files is a good idea.

Also as much as I like SIGINT it's the HUMINT people like us have to worry about.

Things like [url=http://eckbox.sourceforge.net/]van ecke phreaking
and other forms of signal interception are scary. However police officers are not trained to use these tactics. Why should they when HUMINT has proven so fruitful. Undercovers and CIs are the bread and butter of drug cops. Most low level drug networks organize themselves in ways that leave them highly vulnerable to HUMINT attacks. Many even rely on a primitive face-to-face topology which is suicidally dangerous for all involved and quite frankly stupid to an extreme (though someone is going to have to take the risk of dealing small quantities in person due to the cost of running more sensible networks and the relatively low margins involved). The DEA wont be using expensive lasers when they have cheaper paid informants who will make just about any claim they want. I'd also like to mention that if you are close enough to the other person to talk with them you have problems bigger then window vibrations.
