Super Soil in the Winter

Now that I have more money saved up I am making the switch to 100% organic for my indoor garden (sick of dealing with misleading fertilizer information and want my soil to do the work like in nature). In the super soil recipe it calls for "baking" in the sun for 30 days. In Colorado, winter is approaching and I was wondering what I should do about the baking part during the winter. Unfortunately I don't have room to keep the garbage cans indoors for the winter. I also don't want the cold to kill all the beneficials within the soil, will this be a problem?

sounds like all u can do is keep it from freezing, insulate the cans. and possibly build a makeshift enclosure.

just put it in the house where it will be 50 degree or higher and it will be fine. Cooking means just let it sit and do its thing.....set it and forget it....lol
just make it how it says and make sure it is stored above 50 degrees.

I have made Super Soil in Winnepeg when it was 30 below. The hard part was the damned bags of soil kept freezing even inside a shed I was using.
I stored it inside the home after mixing and it worked great

Keep smelling it. Other than the fish smell, which goes away pretty quick, if it smells off, or bad, turn the soil because it make be going anaerobic.

I will just make sure that I store enough inside to last during the winter. I'll be starting my super soil expedition this weekend and I am very excited. Now I just need to find someone that wants to give/trade me some killer TGA genetics

What's up! I am going through selection right now on Pandora's Box......will send you a PM after this message I can also say that I "cooked" my super soil inside here in CO and MAN.....does this stuff rock!! Just like Sub says, " just mix the stuff up, and use it like your supposed to.. and. it grows enormous cannabis plants, with very little problem"

Sounds good! So do you just keep 32 gallon garbage bins inside during the winter? Also, how much super soil did you start out with in your pots? I am thinking to start off with 30% super soil on the bottom, 30% "buffer" region, and 40% Roots soil and going from there.

Also I have some black strap molasses that I love using, any advice from someone using this with super soil? Reading around it seems like a lot of people use molasses as a good mid-flowering supplement for the soil-life.

Yeah, i just keep it inside in a spare room. I store it in big rubber maid tubs and just mix 1/2 of Subcool's recipe at a time....which is still a lot of soil! As far as ratios of soil I honestly just watched Sub's Youtube transplanting videos like 20 times and then tried to mimic exactly what he does. I also follow his instructions with adding sugars (sucanat) at day #30 and day #45 during budding with great results.

Great, I was also planning on making a 1/2 batch since my garden isn't all that big (I also grow for quality over yield). I figure a half batch will fill a 32 gallon rubber maid tub and still have some left over to put into another tub. Seems like you can't go wrong if you follow Sub's direction. He has only been doing this for 20+ years

I mixed a 1/4 batch and it filled 3/4 of a garbage can

One half batch of super soils makes almost 44 gallons of soil

ColdArmySoldier - I made SS in Colorado and you can check out my TGA thread if you have any questions. I think I am just going to pull my SS into the garage this winter. Never got below freezing in there last winter so I think it will be ok. I got about 110 gallons of SS from a full recipe. Here is a little tip that I am learning.

9+ week strains = 40% super soil
8-9 weeks = 30%
7-8 weeks = 25%

When running beans, it's hard to tell exactly just how big your plant will get in the flower room. I vegged all my stuff to about the same size, and some plants just tower over eachother in flower. Those XL plants obviously need a little more food. Try top dressing SS if you feel like your plants are fading too early.

I also supplement earth juice catalyst @ around day 20 - 40. Mostly sugars that increase nute uptake.

Thanks everyone for the input on the soil volumes. We made up a half batch yesterday and it is looking really good! It was around $150 for everything which is a great deal (especially because we only have to buy base soil for our next batch since we still have a lot of ingredients left). I'll be storing it indoors once the weather starts getting colder.

myfather, thanks for the great advice. How large do you typically make your buffer region? I have been using blackstrap molasses for a while now and I have been liking the results. I'm going to give that a shot and see how the plants like it with the super soil. Luckily our tap water is pretty good (around 80 ppm) so I am looking foreword to only feeding aerated water and not having to worry about fertilizers and keeping track of which plant got fed.

Its funny, my tap water varies by the season. no real consistency. The ppm and ph go up and down. It may also have to do with the temps of my water too. I run everything through a dechlorinater. I hand feed water (not bubbled) to each plant as they need.

as far as the buffer goes... i do not really measure. I just pour a small mound of Roots on top of my SS and rake back and forth with my fingers. I really do not worry about it too much. maybe 2 inches is 50/50.

Hey guys I am in Colorado too. I was wondering if anyone is growing using tents? I am also doing an indoor all organic grow. I am using some outdoor techniques I know( I am originally from So Cal SFV). How well does indoor soil grow do in th ewinter when it comes to intaking the cold air ( I mean its pretty cold lol)...

I grow in a tent. I don't intake my air directly from outside due to the fact the the air is too cold. What I do instead during the winter is intake air from the room the tent is in and control the temperature of the room by opening and closing the window. I haven't yet stored the super soil inside, but I would imagine (as stated by others) there is no problem with doing that.

So would you recommend exhausting the hot air to the outside or just keep it like you said just controlling a window??? I make my own batch of soil myself and so far so good...

I intake from inside the room and I exhaust outside so that my room stays cooler. I use a carbon filter so smell isn't a problem.
