You can get the light pretty close to your sprouts with t5's. If they are h.o's maybe an inch or 2 further away than regular t5's. I'd put them about 8 inches away and see how they respond. If you notice they are getting too stretchy and tall, then move the light a bit closer until you notice the stretch subside and the plants let you know they are happy. "Damage" is less likely to occour from being too far rather than being too close.

Can you provide us more info? What fixture? What Bulbs etc.....? This will help us help you. Example I have a 2 foot T5 Sunblaze brand that came with 6500K bulbs, these bulbs and this fixture runs HOTTER than my 4 foot T5 with the GE brand 6500K bulbs which I can grab with my bare hand while they're on and they don't burn. So obviously the bigger fixture can be closer to the canopy than the smaller one. I am using this as an example to show you not everything T5 is created equal so you can see how there can be differences even with the same temp rating on bulbs of different brands.

Thank u my friend they seem to respond well at about that distance away the stem seemed to have stretched at first because I had the lights about 31 inches high not knowing they wasn't getting enough light but know I've put it about 12 inches away and the stretching has seemed to have stopped I've just brought a bible its says anywhere from 12 to 18 inches the seedlings should respond well I will wait and see I will keep u posted peace

If they are tiny babies then I would put them a few inches away. The other posted suggesting 8 inches sounds abut right. The younger the plant - the more delicate. I use 2 t8s on babies and still have a few inches away. T8s are not as strong as T5s.

Thx for letting me know 6 to 8inch mark sound about right for my seedling but another thing I need to know my temp goes up to about 81 Under the lights next to the pot level is this giving me faulse reading also got a osculating fan in the room plus my light is a maxibright 2foot 4 tube t5.should I put the thermometer some where else in a shaded spot

Make a small shade for the thermometer if youd like, a simple piece of card stock or paper folded in half and placed over the thermometer in a pyramid shape would give you a good reading of the temp at whatever level it is placed

put your hand at the height where your would like your sprouts to develop and adjust the light so it doesn't feel hot on your hand
