Seeds started germating on 5-9-07
8 seeds in wet paper towel covered in celophane
8 seeds in wet soil moist in an open glass bowl

5-11-07
3 seeds formed tap roots in paper towels
All 8 seeds formed tap roots in soil moist! The root is even about 50% bigger than those in paper towels! I'll be going this route from now on unless something terrible happens to these.

I just took the last germed seed ( 5 inch root) and putit in soil.

More details...

My veg lights produce 10,000 lumens. With two of 'em I'll be producing 20,000 lumens over about 6 square feet. Hopefully this will be enough.

The lights are suspended over the planters by use of a 40" twist-lock shower-curtain type rod. From it I use metal curtain hooks to suspend the light. This allows me to easily orient the light over the plants. Raising and lowering is accomplished by adding/removing hooks to raise/lower in 1.5" increments.

My flower room is separate. I'll be using a hand made rack containing eighteen 23 watt cfls at 2700k for a total of 414 watts. I may double this for some added umph... Haven't decided yet. May even swap out the 23 watters for some 42 watters. We'll see...

My plans are to top/FIM my plants in veg. I may save 4 plants for potential mothers...to be decided later. Once flowering starts and all the dudes are sent to swim with the fishies, I'll set up my screen and SCROG the crop.

I'm also considering supplementing with CO2 in flower and adding extra ventilation. Currently my flower room is ventilated with a 70cfm exhaust and filtered through activated carbon. Other odor controls are already in place.

Update 5-13-07

7 of the 8 seeds germinated in Soil Moist have broken the surface.
1 of the 8 seeds germinated in wet paper towels have broken the surface. Granted, of the 8 seeds done in paper towels, 5 of the 8 took a day longer to germinate.

I'll continue to monitor to see if any ill effects come about from the Soil Moist method. So far they seem very vigorous and have no seed casing on the sprout.

I've been misting the soil twice per day from a 32 oz mister bottle of water with a few drops of Super Thrive mixed in. The soil is Miracle Grow Moisture Control. I may move to a different soil when I transplant these to bigger pots depending on the soils performance.

Update 5-28
Doing great, suffered a little heat stress but recovering

my dig camera is busted so all I had was a webcam to snap these...

It's been 15 days since most of the sprouts broke the soil. I kept the 10 strongest ones and destroyed the rest. I had to raise the lights to induce a little stretching as they were beginning to look like cabbages.

The soil is still Miracle Grow Moisture Control. This soil does NOT have any time released fertilizers. Seems to be doing just fine.

correction, the frickin soil does have time released ferts. Damn it, how did I miss that on the label? Got a little burn on a few plants, but for the most part they are healthy and growing faster than my last grow using old soil. Oh well, live and learn. Sucks that there's such a little selection for soils in our garden centers around here.

Topped 6 of 10 plants today.

Newly designed ventilation cooler now keeping box between 72f-80f degrees. That's almost 10 degrees different while the outside temperature has gone up about 4 degrees.
