The atmospheric temperature should be in the low 70's during the day, dropping into the 50's at night. This rule is not absolute, however.

51F is pretty damn cold. Where do you live? You are jsut starting a plant outdoors?? Winter is coming up; what are you planning on doing??

i'm a newbie growing in a cold english climate outdoors in my garage...

i checked my babies this morning and it was 50° in my growroom, my plants are doing fine though because i've done this...

My growroom is enclosed and covered in a blanket to insulate.

I have modified a bathroom extractor fan so that it is reversed and sucks air into the growroom (near the bottom)... i've done away with a fan to circulate air as this one reversed extractor circulates enough air to grow a couple of plants...

I have a vent near the top which bad air is forced out of.

I have a dry fan heater (with a thermostat) which is on a timer to keep the garage from getting too cold of a night. I have attached a venting exhaust to the outerside of the extractor fan and placed it not too far away from the fan so it sucks in warm dry air sporadically (just enough to keep the grow room from dropping below 50°)

Even in this country, with an insulated growroom, the light heats the room sufficiently so that through the day it's temperature can get close to 75°-80° and on occassion when it's frosty, it drops to 50°.

Also I would advise mixing vermiculite into your soil.. as an addition but a layer of vermiculite (about 2-3mm) around the top of the soil... this will stop the roots from getting too cold.

hope this helps...

check my grow journal ... my new plants are doing fine... still early stages but after my first two died, I felt the same as you did.. persistence will hopefully pay off... besides, i've not had anything to smoke for about 3 months!

p.s. if there's anyway you can grow outdoors but in a garage or shed or something, then do it, you really don't want them dropping below 50°
