So my girls have been giving off their sweet sensual perfume for days now, and I know I should have done this sooner... but here is my DIY carbon filter..

Picked up a few things at walmart.

Black duck-tape
Black "Pencil cup"
Smaller black "Pencil cup"
Black ladies socks (pantyhose)
Activated carbon

Poor some carbon in the mesh like "pencil cup"

.... just enough so the smaller cup is level with the larger cup.

Slip the smaller cup into the sock

Tuck the sock into the smaller cup holding the end of the sock. Pore in the carbon.. keep holding the end of the sock.

Now pull on the end of the sock and use your finger to guide the carbon into the space between both cups until filled.

Now pull the end of the sock over the entire filter.. twist the end of the sock at the bottom and pull it up over the end of the cup.

Now simply use duck-tape to place the filter over your exhaust fan. I used a rubber band to secure it...

Works great... though I already miss that sweet aroma =[

Don't forget to visit the rest of my micro grow for more great Zen style DUI.. link in my sig...
.

dude, nothing short of brilliance on your part with this. i did a diy style with some stuff from wal mart and lowes but your idea is WAY better. and i'm sure that if people needed bigger filters, i'm sure we can find 2 different sized mesh style wastepaper baskets/trash cans, you get the idea. I'm quite sure you can get large panty hose to stretch over it too. this should now be in the diy carbon filters in rollitup. i think yours is the best one of them all now as far as price and ease of making and obtaining the materials, not many people can say they live too far from a wal mart ;) thanks for this contribution bro, i'm due to maintenance mine and i'm going with your method for sure :)

There is a calculation for this, but I can't remember it, but pretty sure it's king around in the forum somewhere. Look at the surface area of the retail filters and compare it to the CFM rated fans they sell them with and you can prolly reverse engineer it.

ha ha ha ...reverse engineer lol im a auto mechanic not super sharp on math skills but im sure theres a simple way at least look and compare thickness and diameter ect. ect or make one and fiddle from there :D

i love the idea but i just dont understand what kind of fan or how the fan can be placed so that it sucks the air threw the carbon...thank you for your time ????

Just put your fan or a PC fan right next to the open air area of the first container and voila.

Also anyone have measurements of the containers? not really sure how large they should be.

I can't find these black cups anywhere. All I can find is a 'jumbo' one, and not a smaller one. Maybe Wally world stopped selling these?

Any office supply store will carry them. Looking at Office Depot online, I found around 10 different styles before I stopped looking. All were priced between $5 - $16.

[h=1]6 in. In-Line Booster Fan - CFM 188 would be enought or too much for that kind of filter?[/h]

This is a great thread. Im going to try and make a larger one with a mesh trash can and fabric. Add some ducting fixtures to it.

I stopped by both Walmart supercenters in my town, and I couldn't find these. I'm assuming they no longer carry them. They don't even have black duct tape.

I'll have to look online for the cups.
