I think it's good so long as you can manage the heat, what size area you tryin to light with that?

My thoughts are only good, 4 x 400watts should be a nice little set-up :) Just so long as you can keep your temps in check and you've got plans for proper ventilation, anyway. What medium/style of growth are you planning on using? I'm sure folks would have more and better input if you shared a little more about your plans, and the tools and supplies you have access to.

as above stated in the attic is not so great due to flir detection. your roof will glow big time, 4 in the house no problem.

I'm not sure how the law works in the UK on a day to day basis, but normally they can see them, but they have no right to assume they are anything other than reptile or aquarium lights, until proven otherwise, usually with a security breach, a 'ratting out', or odor leak. Otherwise, they'd be breaking down a lot more pet enthusiasts doors :)

I've never had anyone knocking for either of my uses, for animals or growing, I've lived all over, and have used thousands of watts in both residential and industrial property with choppers flying by all the while. I lived near an airport that the police took off from for more than two years, at one point. The main difference between me and people who get nabbed, is that I keep my odor in check, and I remember the old saying 'loose lips, sink ships'. If you keep your front perfect, they've got nothing to use on you.

If they pick up the heat, then walk by your flat and smell a strong odor of growing cannabis however, you're done for.

There are materials you can use for blocking IR, as well as reducing heats capacity to escape and warm your room and roof, in suspicious patterns. Google is your friend :) A single heat vent means nothing to them, you can install it like you'd install a drier vent. A pattern of lights is a bit more noticeable.

Id look into the power consuption of 4x400 and the power consumption of 2x1000 or 3x600. Im not framiliar with european or british electrical setups but you might get better bang for your buck.

In the UK the heat sig is all they need for probable cause to gain a warrent. I know several people who have had their homes raided for simply having reptiles kept in their garage. (non growers/smokers)
I know no one myself that would even consider growing in an attic unless your seriously in the middle of nowhere or in an industrial area where the signature would be nothing unusual.

If your aware of the risks... you can minimise.
If you ignore the risks.... your fucked.

4x400W ....ain't no personal grow ;)

If that's true over there, then DON'T do it OP if you are in the UK. Not worth it, if that's true then their establishment is a little less lenient than others.

In the US, Australia and other places I've lived they need a lot more than just a heat signature, especially considering it's still legal to own aquariums and reptiles and all, and they use the exact same lights (sometimes stronger) :)

:o I just read that article, I feel a little like I've dodged a bullet. I was only there pitching in for a friend for a month, I had no idea they could justify it simply like this over there:
" West Yorkshire Police Inspector Darren Brown said:

'I would like to apologise for the distress this may have caused. However, I would point out that these tactics are essential in tackling drugs across the district.' "
Every pet owner over there should be putting their foot down.. cannabis entirely aside, that's just not right.
