Took a vacation from growing...now I'm back with 4 babies

ok so I wasn't around long before, because my plants died, I suppose im the murderer in the end, they got to be about 6 inches tall and then poof, the plague got them....

that said, I'm back with my 100% cfl Setup, which consists of a newly added white vanity plate with 4 sockets each with a y connector(4 daylight cfl bulbs, and 4 soft white cfl's, which are subject to change at any point...) the soil has gone a long way too, the soil mixture is worm castings, play sand, and all organic moodoo soil-no more miracle grow for me!

so now things are going good, im on day 4 and the plants are much bigger than the last time i hit day 4...however, they still seem scrawny(wirey at the stems) and it looks like they may be stretching though the lights are about an 1" 1/2 away from the tops, I'm growing 2 plants to a container and as always this grow is just another experiment, i have no intention on selling or profiting, i just want to test new ways to grow, and maybe luck out and get something to smoke in the end....

all that out of the way, here's how the experimental shit is going, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated,

1. although the mixture contains sand, i thought i would add a layer of sand to the top, so that the stems protrude from about a 1/2 inch of sand, i know sand is good for drainage, but i dont want to suck all the water from the plant...if this is a bad idea, PLEASE TELL ME!

2. I've devised a strange aeration system that is peculiar even to me, i used some refrigerator hose i got at a hardware store, and made a shitload of holes in it with a needle, i then attached said hose to an aquarium pump, and before planting the seeds, i ran the hose thru both containers and turned the pump on, now air is being pumped directly into the soil....yet again...bad idea? who knows...i sure as hell dont!

3.I've lined the insides of my cabinet with a $1.89 emergency blanketswhich is wonderfully reflective and easy to cut....easy to tape up or mount?...not at all, but it's there, the heat is a problem when i have 8 lights burning in there so I cut it down to 4...1 light per plant, though if they make it out of this shitty looking runt phase i will likely give them more lights.

4. i added fans to my last setup, which was unfortunately too late it seems, as my plants died, and obviously plants dont talk unless you smoke really good herb, so they couldn't say if it was the heat that was doing them in, however i now have 4 computer fans spinning their hearts out in this little space and hey, it seems to work great, 2 intakes and 2 exhausts, i have them in different heights so when i do find my camera and take pics dont think i lied, if you don't see them right off the bat.

i think that covers updates and experiments so im going to let it be at that, please if there is any feedback, or anyone who knows from experience that what im trying is a bad idea let me know asap, i always feel terrible when my babies die-

thanks,

Storm

yo storm... im not expert but i think the air tubing thing is a really interesting idea. ive only grown in hydro but in that medium the more air you can feed the roots the better.. i cant think of any reason the same wouldnt be true of soil. i dunno about the others tho. i do wonder tho if sand would prevent the air from really traveling through the soil, cause if u think about it sand is really fine and might trap the air in the soil... or the water for that matter.. IMHO i dont think i'd do the sand but i've never grown soil so i dont really know what im talking about!

sounds legit, good work, i think i have seen others use the O2 hose idea, i a m not sure if its a good idea or not, but if it is bad then you can always turn it off! do u really have a heat prob with 4 fans? i had 6 lights and 1 fans and my temp was perfect... well goodluck ill watch

WE WANT PICS :)

ok well i removed the air hose...not so great after all since it only has one speed and it likes to blow the soil all over the place....

however i split my test in half, i left two plants in regular soil mixture, and the other two in the soil mix with about an inch and a half of sand on top i took pics and will upload when i get back from work, the two plants in the regular soil are growing slowly but very healthy looking, one actually looks slightly mutated...you'll see in the pics, but i never saw it happen before...

the two i had in the sand and soil, grew quicker though one has begun getting yellow and i fear the sand is sucking the moisture out of the stocks they're still very small so i think the yellowing is drought or heat.

the fan issue is i'm using 4 computer fans...but only two are currently operational approx. 2 feet above the other ones, because the movable shelf is above them i figure why waste the power, and it's not bringing any air past the shelf anyway...

like i said i'll post pics when i get outta work and give you a better idea of whats going on-

thanks for the replies-

...yellowed leaves

diff angle

current setup with water in container behind pots to add some humidity (probably was the reason the plants were yellowing)

the one in front came out of the seed with 3 leaves instead of the normal 2...didn't kno if this is a bad sign or not or even normal i never saw it happen before...

another view of the sandbox...the plants are still growing, but definitely very dry

let me know if you have any ideas,

Thanks,
Storm

You should check out Natmoon's grow. He is using an 'airbasket'. He's using a net pot, with soil and an air pump/line running along the bottom of the pot, just like you. Except he added a sponge around the tube to stop soil and shit getting in the airline. He has a very good journal. Check it out. You will find it easily.

Not sure about the sand to be honest, just cos I've never seen it done before. But this is experimental, like you say, so go for it man. I wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted.
