Tough seed cases

Poor little plants can't get out of the seed shell.

They try and get stuck even though I soak them and leave them in damp paper towels.

What to do? What to do?

hi m8 ,the seed case stays on sometimes for a while ,i have had a few stay on for a few days after they had popped up out of the soil ,in the end i carfully removed it ,but i would reccomend waiting a while before u try this as you could damage the little seedling .

In general I would agree but when I have expensive seeds from Amsterdam every seed counts and some of them just don't make it out of the seed case. The leaves cannot force their way out.
I was wondering if there is some safe way to score or weaken the tough seed case before germinating.

Hi Netch

You could soak the seeds in water for 2-12 hours... I have heard of many people using this technique to expidite germination and soften the seed casing. I personaly fear forgetting the seeds in the water and drowning the litle buggers.. yikes.. they would probably drown if left in water for more than 24 hours...

I soaked mine for 12hrs and then put them in a wet paper towel they had 1/4 in roots within 24hrs. I used plain tap water with a higher PH, I dont know if acidic water(lower PH) is healthy for seeds or not but for my case higher HP worked well for me.

use a nail file and gently file one side of the seed. but do it gently, and only for like 30-60 seconds, then soak it until it sinks, whether its 2hours or 24 hours, then put use the paper towel method...

some seeds need to go thru conditioning to awaken them from whats called the seeds "dormancy"..some seeds need to be put in the freezer overnight before germination to act like the winter period the seeds would go thru if they were in the wild, some needs to be scratched *VERY GENTLY* with a small needle to allow the seed to soak water.

I used a pill bottle lined with sand paper and got good results. I had the same problem, my seeds would not break. If your seeds came from a sack or are old you should try this method worked for me

Another treatment is an acid soak, for ten-fifteen minutes in dilute sufuric acid, and then soaking in water.

I go through this all the time with Hash Plants. They do in time bust out of their shell. Here is the way to take care of this problem.

After about 4-5 days of soaking in a lightly damp paper towel, carefully take the seed out and place in a 1" rockwool cube (slitted type). Place seed only a little ways down with the top of the seed showing.

Place rockwool cube in a small plastic cup. Pour water in the cup only about a 1/8 of the way up and cover with plastic wrap, leaving enough space above for the seedling to grow. Place back into a dark and very warm area for about two days. Then remove from the dark and place under your light. Spray seedling 2-3 times a day. This should allow the shell to fall right off. If not then take a needle and carefully remove shell. very rare do I ever have to use the needle method.

seedlings do most of their growing in the dark. Thus the reason for placing back into the dark. Most of my seedling bust out of the shell the first day or two when placed back in the dark.
