Trail Mix Grow Journal

Hey Guys,

I'm finally in a legal state again so I've started popping seeds I've had. The strain name is being called Trail Mix because I saved these seeds from some great smoke I got while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. All I know is that is was one of his Blue Dream/ White Widow plants that he started breeding.

I'll be growing in some organic soil I made. This mix consists of:

1.33 cu/ft Peat (10 gallons)
1.5 cu/ft Compost (11.2 gallons)
.67cu/ft Biochar (5 gallons)
1.33cu/ft Buckwheat hulls (10 gallons)
.5 cu/ft Pea Gravel (3.7 gallons)
4 cups Alfalfa
2 cups Kelp
1 cup Neem/Karanja
2 cups Crab Shell
1 cup Limestone
1 cup Gypsum
12 cups Rock Dust

I'll be growing in two locations but the grow I'll be focusing on the most will be a smaller grow in a 24x24x55" tent. For this tent I'll be using 9x Bridgelux V18's mounted on MODULED MEGA 13420-B heat sinks and powered in parallel from a HLG-240H-36A driver. This is my first time using a Constant Voltage driver. I have the Io set at the minimum so currently the lights are running at .366mA each. Do I need to adjust the Vo at all? At max Io the chips would be running at .744mA which would put them around ~34v.

For the V18's I have 3 different CCT's, 3x 5000k 70CRI, 3x 3500k 90 CRI, and 3x 3000k 90 CRI. The lights are on a 21"x21" 1/8" Angle Aluminum frame arranged like this:

30k 50k 30k

35k 35k 35k

50k 30k 50k

This is the layout I decided on to try and even out the spectrum. Will it work out better than a single CCT? No idea. This is just going to be for personal use so I'm not too concerned about quantity. This will just be a grow for fun.

I got everything set up last night to test the lights and make sure everything was wired up properly.

I'm planning on having two plants in the tent at a time. I haven't decided on what I'll be growing them in as far as containers are concerned although I'm leaning towards the Big Bad Bed Mini.

That's about it for now. I'll update as much as I can. Feel free to ask any questions.

Hey, what year did you do the trail? I'm an unreformed hiker myself. Hope to do the AT one of these days. Got two major handicaps though. A job and a wife. I'm only 56, so a few more years before I can get the job portion of that sorted. No hope on the wife front. She is a keeper, so I will just have to work around that.

Good luck with your grow. I'm an outdoor guy myself. Down here in NW Florida, I have to be on the qt.

My trail name on the Florida Trail is 3 G. That is because my habit of having grits, granola and GORP for breakfast. So I can relate to your strain name.

Here they are today. The two in pots will be going to the other grow. That's 15 gallons of soil in a 30gal smart pot. I was going to use the Big Bad Bed Mini but chose this instead as it has the same size base 24" and I can raise the sides if need be to keep any future mulch in. The other two plants in there are catnip and borage. I threw down some seeds today, Strawberry clover, Roman Chamomile, Oat Grass, Catnip, Stinging Nettle, Little Gem Lettuce and I think some Basil.

I'll veg until I can take a set of clones off of them and then flip to flower about a week or two later to see if we got any females.

A trick an old hippy women showed me. Once they are sexually mature, cover one limb tip from each plant with a paper bag each day after 12 hours of light. Mark the limb with something. so you cover the same limb everyday. {remove the bag after lights out} Should show sex in less than 2 weeks. That way you don't have to take clones of the males if you don't want to.

They got an Alfalfa/Kelp foliar and soil drench today with some Ful-Power and Agsil-16 added to it. I ended up topping them a couple of days ago and they are rebounding nicely from it.

The plant in the last picture has been a little ugly with it's leaf growth, but its keeping up so I'm not worried. The current plan is to veg for another week or two and then flip them.

Looking good doing a total no till perhaps. I use no till for my veggie garden love the process. Your plants look real happy with that alfalfa hay?
Yup this is going to be a no-till. I wish it was Alfalfa hay. I'm sure I could have found some without too much difficulty but the bagged straw at the farm & feed store was readily available and easy to transport. The only alfalfa i've seen around is the cubed and pelleted versions. I could break down and get the grass from petco/petsmart but I would hate myself for spending that much money to get so little. And just to edit one of the earlier posts, the bottom plant is clearly basil and not borage (I have to remember to label my sprouts).

I finally got around to framing and setting up the lights at the other place. Here's what i got so far.

The front two really got screwed in the beginning. I used Jiffy Pots for the first time and expected them to break down rather quickly, they did not. I pulled one out and found the sides were completely intact and the roots could only escape out of the bottom. So I cut the jiffys away and basically shook off all the dirt (seed starting mix) from the roots and put them in these containers with the final mix. Needless to say I will not be using Jiffy pots again and the plants have rebounded nicely.

The back two were starting in the standard 4" square nursery pots using the final mix soil and I never had a problem with them.

One more thing... Unless your have some hearing loss like I do, and even then, wear ear-pro & eye-pro when cutting. The extruded heatsinks you see were 18" 5.88 HSUSA and I cut them down to 6" using a circular saw and a finishing blade with carbide tips. It was the kind of loud that penetrates into your head and feels like its coming from inside.

I got tinnitus so I hear that all the time. I have a work shop where I make my motorcycles and it gets real noisy quick. I cringe with band saws cutting aluminum or circular saws. Nice looking grow. I use starter plugs made from organics they make great clone holders
Same here, don't ya just love that ringing. Could you point me in the direction of the starter plugs or any info about them? Do you buy them or make them? Thanks
